MLB Ejections 057-60 - Vic Carapazza (WAS-BOS Fight)

2B Umpire Vic Carapazza ejected Red Sox 1B Willson Contreras, manager Chad Tracy, and bench player Nate Eaton, and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas (fighting after strikeout/benches clearing incident) in the bottom of the 4th inning of the #Nationals-#RedSox game. With one out and none on, Red Sox batter Contreras took a 3-2 sweeper from Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli for a called third strike, upon which Cavalli yelled "sit down, boy" at Contreras, resulting in a benches-clearing incident during which Contreras threw his helmet and Mikolas and Eaton fought each other. Cavalli was not ejected for instigation. At the the time of the ejections, the Red Sox were leading, 1-0. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 8-1.

With one out and two on, Red Sox batter Contreras attempted to check his swing on a 1-2 slider from Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas, ruled a ball by HP Umpire Edwin Moscoso, and called a swinging strike on appeal by 1B Umpire Lentz. At the time of the ejection, the Red Sox were leading, 5-1. The Red Sox ultimately won the contest, 6-3.

In the 7th, with two out and the bases loaded, Contreras took a 1-1 sinker from Pirates pitcher Colin Holderman for a called second strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the inner half of home plate and below the hollow of the knee (px -0.66, pz 1.22 [sz_bot 1.56 / RAD 1.44 / MOE 1.36]), the call was incorrect. At the time of Contreras and Marmol's ejections, the Pirates were leading, 6-3. In the 8th, with two out and none on, Walker took a 1-2 sinker from Holderman for a called third strike. With none out and none on, Contreras took 0-0 and 2-1 sweepers from Mariners pitcher Penn Murfee for called first and second strikes before striking out on an ensuing pitch. Replays indicate both pitches were located over the heart of home plate and below the hollow of the knee (strike one: px 0.01, pz 1.34 [sz_bot 1.61 / RAD 1.49 / MOE 1.41] and strike two: px -0.31, pz 1.31 [sz_bot 1.61 / RAD 1.49 / MOE 1.41]), the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Cardinals were leading, 6-3. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 7-3.

Replays indicate the pitch was located over the inner edge of home plate and waist-high (px -0.87, pz 2.71) and that all other pitches during the at-bat were officiated properly, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Diamondbacks were leading, 9-5. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 10-6.

With none out and two on (R2, R3), Contreras attempted to check his swing on a 0-2 slider from Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco, ruled a swinging strike by HP Umpire Timmons. Play was reviewed and adjudicated by the UEFL Appeals Board, the call on the field of "swing" was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Cubs were leading, 1-0. The Cubs ultimately won the contest, 7-2.

With two out and the bases loaded, Happ took a 3-2 sinker from Nationals pitcher Joe Ross for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located off the outer edge of home plate and belt-high (px -1.08, pz 2.93 [sz_top 3.64]), the call was incorrect. Due to his status on the injured list, Contreras' call was irrecusable.^ At the time of the ejections, the Nationals were leading, 5-1. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 7-2.

Replays indicate the 2-2 pitch was located over the outer half of home plate and thigh-high (px .216, pz 2.107 [sz_bot 1.535 / MOE 1.618, sz_top 3.371 / MOE 3.288]), the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejections, the Cardinals were leading, 2-1.
