Why Was This Ball Called Fair in New York?

After HP Umpire Lance Barrett signaled fair when Yankees third baseman DJ LeMahieu swiped his glove at Royals batter Bobby Witt Jr's bunt, New York seemed perplexed by the lack of a foul ball call.

To solve this riddle, we must first consult the rulebook definition for "Fair Ball"—

"A FAIR BALL is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base, or that touches first, second or third base, or that first falls on fair territory on or beyond first base or third base, or that, while on or over fair territory touches the person of an umpire or player, or that, while over fair territory, passes out of the playing field in flight."

Within this wordy definition appear two criteria for determining whether a ball is fair or foul: in some cases, the ball must be on fair territory/ground in order to be considered fair whereas, in others, the ball may be either on or over fair territory/ground.

For example, a fly ball to left field must first fall on fair territory. But notice that for the Royals-Yankees play—fielder LeMahieu physically touching the ball prior to first or third base—the ball may be either on or over fair territory when touched in order to be deemed fair.

Thus, even though the ball itself was in contact (or on) with foul territory, part of the baseball's sphere was positioned over fair territory when first touched by LeMahieu, and, thus, the ball was ruled fair.

MLB Ejection 073 - Brian O'Nora (2; Aaron Boone)

2B Umpire Brian O'Nora ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone (overturned Replay Review fair/foul and runner placement call by 1B Umpire Nestor Ceja; QOCY) in the bottom of the 1st inning of the #Yankees-#Reds game. With two out and one on (R1), Reds batter Spencer Steer hit a 2-2 slider from Yankees pitcher Luis Severino on a fly ball to right fielder Jake Bauers, ruled foul by Ceja. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Reds manager David Bell, Ceja's call was overturned to a fair ball and baserunner R1 Jonathan India was placed at home, scoring a run. Replays indicate that with two outs, India was running on the pitch and that Yankees outfielder Bauers dropped the fly ball in fair territory such that India would likely have scored had the correct fair ball call been made as the initial call. At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 4-1.

As part of the Replay Review, the Replay Official placed runners at first and second base. Replays indicate that Braves baserunner R1 Ronald Acuña Jr returned to first base to tag up and didn't leave until the ball was dropped and 3B Umpire Gonzalez had called the foul ball, at which time outfielder Olivares had stopped playing, and that batter-runner Olson's advancement was limited by preceding baserunner Acuña's placement, the call was correct. MLB Ejection 072 - Sean Barber (Dusty Baker) & Infield Fly

HP Umpire Sean Barber ejected Astros manager Dusty Baker (fair ball call; QOCY) an inning after 2B Umpire John Tumpane ruled Red Sox batter Rafael Devers out on the infield fly rule during Thursday's #Astros-#RedSox game. In the bottom of the 6th inning, with one out and two on (R1, R2), Red Sox batter Devers hit a fly ball to Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, resulting in an infield fly declaration by 2B Umpire Tumpane that put Devers out before Correa dropped the ball. As we've discussed many, many times, umpires consider several criteria regarding an infield fly.*

1) First and second base were occupied with less than two outs (one out, R1, R2).
2) The batter hit a fair fly ball which was not a line drive nor a bunt.
3) It could be caught by infielder Correa with ordinary effort. This was established as Correa positioned himself in the outfield facing the infield, or, colloquially, was "camped."

As for the ejection, in the top of the 7th inning, with one out and one on (R1), Astros batter Yuli Gurriel hit a 1-2 sinker from Red Sox pitcher Adam Ottavino in front of home plate, ruled fair by HP Umpire Barber upon the baseball being initially touched in fair territory by Red Sox catcher Christian Vasquez, and resulting in a double play as Astros baserunner Yordan Alvarez was tagged out while off his base by Red Sox second baseman Christian Arroyo. Replays indicate Gurriel's batted ball was retrieved by Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez in fair territory and that the batted ball did not touch Gurriel's person, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Red Sox were leading, 12-8. The Red Sox ultimately won the contest, 12-8.

This is Sean Barber (29)'s 2nd ejection of 2021.
Sean Barber now has 4 points in the UEFL Standings (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 4).

*"An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out...On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder-not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines."
