MLB Ejection 014 - Nestor Ceja (1; Matt Quatraro)

2B Umpire Nestor Ceja ejected Royals manager Matt Quatraro (balk no-call; QOCN) in the top of the 1st inning of the #Royals-#Yankees game. With two out and one on, Yankees pitcher Will Warren faced Royals batter Jac Caglianone while operating out of Set Position, with no balk called. Replays indicate that prior to the 1-0 pitch, Warren engaged the rubber, moved from stretch to set by bringing his hands together, and then removed his pitching hand from his glove to access his PitchCom system, before returning his hand to his glove and delivering the ball to the batter; this is a balk, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 13-4.

With none out and none on, during Mike Yastrzemski's at-bat, Royals baserunner R1 Kyle Isbel attempted to steal second base, thrown out by catcher Edgar Quero to shortstop Montgomery. Replays indicate that prior to receiving the throw, Montgomery obstructed baserunner Isbel, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Royals were leading, 2-1. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

With one out and one on and Michael Massey at bat, Giants pitcher Robbie Ray threw to first baseman Casey Schmitt, who threw to shortstop Willy Adames to pick off Royals baserunner R1 Dairon Blanco, attempting to steal second base. Replays indicate Adames tagged Blanco prior to the runner's arrival at second base and without illegally blocking the runner's access to the base (act of fielding exception), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

At the time of the ejection, the Royals were leading, 6-4. The Tigers ultimately won the contest, 7-6.

With two out and one on, Royals batter Hunter Renfroe hit a ground ball to Guardians third baseman José Ramírez, who attempted to tag Royals baserunner R2 Loftin running between second and third base, resulting in an out of the base path ruling from 3B Umpire Gibson. Replays indicate Loftin ran more than three feet away from his base path to avoid a tag and this deviation was not part of his attempt to avoid interfering with a fielder fielding a batted ball, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Guardians were leading, 1-0. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 2-1.

With two out and one on, Royals baserunner Bobby Witt Jr was picked off and caught stealing by Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes, who threw to shortstop Anthony Volpe as Witt arrived at second base, called out by 2B Umpire Clemons, who ruled fielder Volpe did not obstruct the runner Witt. Replays indicate Volpe gained possession of the baseball prior to placing his foot in Witt's path, blocking the runner's access to second base; this is not obstruction due to possession, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Royals were leading, 2-0. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 4-3.

HP Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected Mariners pitcher Robbie Ray and Royals pitcher Luke Weaver (national anthem standoff/refusal to leave field/delay of game) prior to the top of the 1st inning of the #Mariners-#Royals game. Following the pre-game performance of the national anthem, off-day pitchers and bench personnel Ray (Seattle) and Weaver (Kansas City) remained on the playing field in the locations occupied during the national anthem. They remained in these on-field positions as Royals starting pitcher Max Castillo completed his warmup pitches and the game was ready to begin, and were ejected for delaying the start of the game after failing to follow the umpires' direction to leave the field, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejections, the game hadn't begun (score was tied 0-0). The Royals ultimately won the contest, 13-12.

With one out and one on (R2), Royals baserunner R2 Bobby Witt Jr attempted to steal third base and became involved in a rundown when Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes stepped off the mound and threw to second baseman Gleyber Torres, who chased Witt to third base, ruled out by 3B Umpire Gonzalez after being tagged while not on a base. Replays indicate Witt slid toward third base and contact with fielder Torres occurred as Witt broken contact with or overslid past third base, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 2-1. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 12-2.

1B Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected Royals manager Mike Matheny (check swing strike two call) in the bottom of the 6th inning of the #Tigers-#Royals game. With one out and one on (R1), Royals batter Whit Merrifield attempted to check his swing on a 0-1 sinker from Tigers pitcher Casey Mize while being hit by the pitch, ruled a swing on appeal by 1B Umpire Johnson and resulting in a dead ball strike. Play was reviewed and adjudicated by the UEFL Appeals Board (1-7), the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Tigers were leading, 2-0. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 3-2.

At the time of Singer's ejection, the Royals were leading, 4-3. The Indians ultimately won the contest, 5-4.
