MLB Ejections 036-38 - Lance Barrett (LAA-TB)

3B Umpire Lance Barrett ejected Angels pitcher/bench player Brent Suter and Rays pitchers Steven Wilson & Manuel Rodríguez (delay of game/refusal to leave field/pre-game national anthem standoff) in the top of the 1st inning of the #Angels-#Rays game. Following the pre-game performance of the national anthem, off-day pitchers and bench personnel Suter, Wilson, and Rodríguez remained on the playing field in locations occupied during the national anthem and remained in these positions after Barrett instructed them to leave and warned they would be ejected if they didn't leave the field, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the game hadn't begun (tied 0-0). The Angels ultimately won the contest, 14-3.

MLB Ejection 016 - Adrian Johnson (1; Kyle Snyder)

HP Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder (denied ABS challenge/timing; QOCN) in the bottom of the 13th inning of the #Rays-#Pirates game. With two out and two on, Pirates batter Konnor Griffin took a 1-1 sweeper from Rays pitcher Roendrys Gómez for a called second ball, with Johnson denying Rays catcher Nick Fortes' challenge request. Replays indicate the pitch was located off the inner edge of home plate and belt-high (px -0.85, pz 3.35), but that pitcher Gómez timely requested an ABS challenge of Johnson's ball call prior to Fortes' head-tap, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 8-6. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 8-7, in 13 innings.

3B Umpire Alan Porter ejected Rays manager Kevin Cash (HBP Replay Review affirmed Astros batter Yainer Diaz was hit by a pitch while swinging; QOCY) in the top of the 8th inning of the #Astros-#Rays game. With two out and none on, Astros batter Yainer Diaz attempted to check his swing on a 2-2 fastball from Rays pitcher Edwin Uceta, ruled a hit-by-pitch (dead ball) by HP Umpire Jim Wolf, ruled a swing by 1B Umpire Brian Walsh on appeal, and affirmed via Replay Review as a HBP dead ball strike as the result of a challenge by Astros manager Joe Espada. Replays indicate the pitch hit batter Diaz as he swung at it for an inning-ending strikeout, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 5-4. The Rays ultimatley won the contest, 8-4.

2B Umpire James Hoye ejected Rays pitcher Edwin Uceta (throwing at Nick Castellanos) in the bottom of the 8th inning of the #Rays-#Phillies game. With two out and one on (R2), Phillies batter Castellanos took a 0-0 sinker from Rays pitcher Uceta for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the pitch was located inside and struck Castellanos on the backside; warnings had not previously been issued, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Phillies were leading, 9-4. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 9-4.

MLB Ejections 156-7 - Ballou, Bacchus (TB-OAK)

HP Umpire Brock Ballou ejected Rays manager Kevin Cash (HBP denied to José Caballero; QOCY) in the top of the 7th and 1B Umpire Erich Bacchus ejected A's manager Mark Kotsay (Replay Review decision which upheld U1's out call; QOCY) in the bottom of the 8th inning of the #Rays-#Athletics game. In the 7th, with none out and none on, Rays batter Caballero was touched by a 2-1 slider from A's pitcher Mitch Spence, ruled a dead ball (stay here) by HP Umpire Ballou, who ruled Caballero failed to attempt to avoid being touched by the pitch. Replays indicate Caballero failed to attempt to avoid being touched by the pitch, which was actually located within the strike zone when it touched Caballero; as the ball (not strike) call favored the ejectee's team, the call was correct (had Oakland instead been ejected, the call would be incorrect).* At the time of Cash's ejection, the game was tied, 2-2.

In the 8th, with one out and none on, A's batter Miguel Andujar hit a 1-2 sweeper from Rays pitcher Garrett Cleavinger on the ground to third baseman Caballero, to catcher Alex Jackson, to first baseman Yandy Díaz, ruled out by 1B Umpire Bacchus. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by A's manager Kotsay, Bacchus' call was upheld, the call was correct. At the time of Kotsay's ejection, the Rays were leading, 4-2. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 4-2.

HP Umpire Chris Guccione ejected Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta (throwing at Rays batter Jose Siri), manager Pat Murphy (arguing ejection) in the top of the 6th and Rays CF Siri & Brewers P Abner Uribe (fighting) in the top of the 8th inning of the #Rays-#Brewers game. In the 6th with none out and one on, Rays batter Siri took a 3-0 fastball from Brewers pitcher Peralta for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the pitch was located inside the right-handed batter's box and struck Siri on the leg, the call was irrecusable. At the time of Peralta and Murphy's ejections, the Brewers were leading, 6-1. In the 8th, with none out and none on, Rays batter Siri hit a 1-1 slider from Brewers pitcher Uribe on the ground to first baseman Rhys Hoskins who threw to Uribe for the out. Siri continued up the baseline and a physical confrontation between Siri and Uribe ensued, resulting in punches thrown and a benches-clearing incident. At the time of the Siri and Uribe ejections, the Brewers were leading, 8-2. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 8-2.

HP Umpire CB Bucknor ejected Rays manager Kevin Cash (pitch clock violation call [automatic ball]; QOCN) in the bottom of the 5th inning of the #Rays-#Guardians game. With two out and none on, Bucknor called Rays pitcher Zack Littell for a pitch clock violation prior to a 0-2 pitch to Guardians batter Andres Gimenez. Replays indicate Littell indeed did not begin his delivery prior to the expiration of time, but that Guardians batter Gimenez first failed to be in the box and alert to the pitcher prior to the 8-second mark because the clock never reset when the batter requested "Time" after the 0-1 pitch, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 4-4. The Guardians ultimately won the contest, 7-6, in 11 innings.
