Replays indicate batter-runner Tatis ran on the infield grass and not within the runner's lane during the last half of his run to first base and in doing so interfered with 1B Aranda's ability to field Booser's throw, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Padres were leading, 3-1. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 5-4, in 11 innings.

Tigers' Short Obstructs Marlins' Berti During Rundown

Marlins baserunner Jon Berti stole second and advanced to third base on an obstruction error by Tigers second baseman Zack Short when Short failed to get out of the way during a rundown, resulting in a collision when Berti stepped or fell backward into a sidestepping Short. Was 3B Umpire Jansen Visconti's obstruction ruling the correct call?

The rulebook's definition of terms states that "obstruction is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner."

Recall that by rule, the fielder has the right of way during a batted ball while the runner has the right of way at any other time (which includes during rundowns). Accordingly, this collision—though physically caused by the runner—is nonetheless the fielder's fault because the fielder was no longer in possession of the ball when it occurred and he stood in a location the runner attempted to access while running the bases.

The exception here would be if the runner Berti clearly and intentionally went out of his way to collide with the fielder, but to prove this requires multiple strides toward the fielder, not simply one step or fall backwards. The fielder Short had no body control when he attempted to sidestep baserunner Berti without the ball and, thus, the collision is his responsibility.

This is not basketball where who gets to the spot first or being set is relevant: all that matters is that the fielder did not have the ball and impeded the runner during a rundown. This is Obstruction Type 1 (Type A) as in Official Baseball Rule 6.01(h)(1) and the obstructed runner is thus awarded the next base—third base.

With two out and none on, A's batter Noda took a 3-2 fastball from Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo for a called third strike. With the bases loaded and one out, Pirates batter Jack Suwinski hit a fly ball to right field, caught by A's outfielder Seth Brown, who threw to third base as Pirates baserunners R3 Austin Hedges and R2 Andrew McCutchen tagged up. As Pirates third baseman Jonah Bride caught the thrown ball, McCutchen stopped and got into a brief rundown, providing just a few seconds of extra time to ensure preceding runner R3 Hedges touched home plate and scored a run before the third out was recorded, as signaled by HP Umpire Visconti.

Jansen Visconti Hired to MLB Umpire Staff

As reported by the Wendelstedt Umpire School, MLB hired alum Jansen Visconti to the staff. Hailing from Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Visconti joins the full-time umpiring roster as the greenest hire of 2020; he made his big league debut in 2018 and officiated 250 regular season games over two seasons, including a league-high 142 games in 2019.

After graduating from the Wendelstedt School in 2010, Visconti began his professional career in the Gulf Coast League, working his way through the New York-Penn, Florida Instructional, South Atlantic, Carolina, Arizona Instructional, Eastern, and International Leagues before his first major league game on April 17, 2018. Visconti has also officiated the Arizona Fall League.

With one out and the bases loaded, Yankees batter Greg Bird hit a 1-1 slider from Blue Jays pitcher Tim Mayza on the ground to first baseman Kendrys Morales, who threw to catcher Danny Jansen for the force out on R3 Miguel Andujar, back to second baseman Devon Travis covering first base in an attempt to complete the inning-ending double play, Bird ruled safe at first for a fielder's choice and Toronto unable to challenge the call due to an unsuccessful challenge earlier in the inning. Replays indicate after Travis leapt in the air to field Jansen's high throw, his cleat appeared to make contact with first base prior to batter-runner Bird's arrival, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 8-2. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 10-2.

Umpire Jansen Visconti makes his MLB debut during Tuesday's Royals-Blue Jays doubleheader in Toronto, joining Jerry Meals' crew as the first base umpire alongside HP Umpire Ed Hickox, 2B Umpire Ron Kulpa, and 3B Umpire Gabe Morales for Game 1, and as the third base umpire for Game 2.

Visconti is on the International League roster for the 2018 season, which is his fourth season in Triple-A. Upon graduation from the Wendelstedt School for Umpires, Visconti officiated in the Gulf Coast (2010), New York-Penn ('10), Florida Instructional ('10), South Atlantic ('11), Carolina ('12), Arizona Instructional ('12-'13), and Eastern ('13-'14) leagues. He officiated the 2017 Arizona Fall League and 2017 AFL Rising Stars Game, in addition to officiating the 2017 IL postseason. Visconti also served as 1B Umpire during the 2014 MiLB All-Star Futures Game at Target Field.

Visconti makes his MLB debut at the age of 30. He resides in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and is the second rookie fill-in umpire to make his debut during the 2018 regular season (Jeremie Rehak, 4/9/18).

Visconti's most recent MiLB game was Friday, April 13's IL matchup between Indianapolis and Buffalo, after which a northeastern storm caused the postponement of the remainder of the series.

MLB Assigns New Fill-Ins Rehak, Visconti Sleeve Numbers

Major League Baseball added two umpires to its Minor League call-up roster, assigning Wendelstedt School alums Jeremie Rehak and Jansen Visconti, both of Triple-A's International League, sleeve numbers and placing the junior umps on MLB's fill-in list for the 2018 season. Rehak and Visconti effectively replace the departed Toby Basner (IL) and Clint Fagan (Pacific Coast League), who had served in the hybrid MiLB/MLB role for a combined 13 years.

#35 Jeremie Rehak: After graduating from the Wendelstedt Umpire School in 2011, Rehak was assigned to the Gulf Coast League, earning promotions to the Appalachian, Florida Instructional, Midwest, California, Eastern, Arizona Instructional, and International Leagues. Rehak, who is 30 and resides in Pennsylvania, enters his 3rd season in Triple-A. His uniform number, #35, was last worn by the late Wally Bell, who passed away during the 2013 postseason.

#52 Jansen Visconti: Another 30-year-old from Pennsylvania (both Rehak and Visconti are from Westmoreland County, PA) who graduated from Wendelstedt's, Visconti earned a spot on the Gulf Coast League roster in 2010, subsequently officiating the New York-Penn, Florida Instructional, South Atlantic, Carolina, Arizona Instructional, Eastern, and International Leagues; 2018 will be Visconti's 4th full year at the Triple-A level. His assigned number, #52, was last worn by Bill Welke, who traded in #52 for brother Tim Welke's #3 following Tim's 2016 retirement.
