MLB Ejection 046: Bob Davidson (1; Don Mattingly)

3B Umpire Bob Davidson ejected Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly for arguing a Replay Review decision that affirmed 1B Umpire Jerry Layne's catch (out) call in the bottom of the 4th inning of the Marlins-Dodgers game. With none out and none on, Dodgers batter Howie Kendrick hit a 1-1 fastball from Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart on a line drive to right field, where right fielder Giancarlo Stanton attempted to make a diving catch. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly, Layne's ruling of "out" was affirmed; Play was appealed and denied by the UEFL Appeals Board, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Marlins were leading, 2-0. The Marlins ultimately won the contest, 5-4.

MLB Ejection 045: Mike Everitt (1; Terry Francona)

HP Umpire Mike Everitt ejected Indians Manager Terry Francona for arguing warnings in the bottom of the 4th inning of the Cardinals-Indians game. With two out and none on, Indians batter Jason Kipnis took a 0-0 fastball for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the pitch was inside and struck Kipnis in the lower back, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Indians were leading, 2-0. The Indians ultimately won the contest, 2-0.

HP Umpire Rob Drake ejected Nationals RF Bryce Harper and Manager Matt Williams for arguing a strike three (check swing) call in the top of the 7th inning of the Nationals-Diamondbacks game. With two out and none on, Harper attempted to check his swing on a 2-2 slider from Nationals pitcher Oliver Perez (all prior callable pitches during the at-bat were properly officiated). Play was reviewed and affirmed (check swing), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 5-5. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 9-6.

Kerwin Danley Injured on Foul Ball to Face, Exits Game

A foul ball knocked Plate Umpire Kerwin Danley out of Tuesday's Nationals-Diamondbacks game in Arizona. With one out and none on in the bottom of the second inning, Diamondbacks batter Nick Ahmed fouled a 94 mph fastball from Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg directly into the center of Danley's hockey-style facemask.

Danley was evaluated by the Arizona training staff and did not return. He was replaced by 2B Umpire Gabe Morales, who completed the game in a three-person alignment with umpires Rob Drake and crew chief Joe West.

Danley has a history of baseball-related injuries, including at least four significant hits to the head:
In 2013, Danley left a Rockies-Reds game after being hit in the mask by a bouncing ball;
Earlier in 2013, Danley had suffered a concussion;
In 2009, Danley was struck by a broken bat, left the game on a stretcher, and suffered a concussion;
In 2008, Danley took a 96-mph pitch directly in the mask and was knocked unconscious.
