ALDS Game 4 (OAK-DET): The Fan Interference Home Run

A fan interference home run in Detroit, RF Umpire Gary Darling presiding, tied the Athletics-Tigers game at four during Game 4 of the American League Division Series. The terminology "fan interference home run" is used because this play, without a doubt, qualifies under the rules book definition of spectator interference—the implications of which may be slightly different than a cursory skim of the rules book might insinuate (see Long-Form Explanation for why). Relevant to the play is the impacted fielder, A's right fielder Josh Reddick.

Replays confirm the spectator interference.

Summary
The spectator interference, under Rule 3.16, does not prevent a home run from being called, though the umpire is obligated to "impose such penalties as in his opinion will nullify the act of interference." If the interference "clearly prevents a fielder from catching a fly ball," the batter is out. The call on the field was technically improper as spectator interference occurred. That said, the penalty to nullify the act of interference may very well have been a four-base award, as in a home run. Darling stated the fielder was not going to catch the ball and it was "clearly going to be a home run," making the result of the play proper. In other words, spectator interference does not imply an out, "ground rule double" or the like. All spectator interference means is a fan reached out of the stands and over the playing field and touched a live ball (or player), the penalty for which is to award bases or outs to nullify the act of interference.

The only improperly administered part of this play was failure to rule spectator interference so that ballpark security could have ejected the offending fan for violating the Comerica Code of Conduct and MLB Rule.

Solution for Case Play 2013-10: Unsportsmanlike Home Run

The Carlos Gomez Brewers-Braves fighting HR Case Play (2013-10) is now complete and available below:

To refresh, with one out and none on in a scoreless Brewers-Braves game, B1 Carlos Gomez hit a home run. As he circled the bases, he and several opponents engaged in unsporting verbal barbs until Gomez was finally confronted by F2 Brian McCann nearly 15 feet from home plate, resulting in a bench clearing brawl during which Gomez was rushed to the Milwaukee clubhouse and two others were ejected. Gomez never physically touched home plate.

Answer, Group Case Play 2013-10: An Unsportsmanlike Home Run
Summary: The run is scored and play is resumed with the Brewers leading, 1-0. In this case play, it is not necessary for Gomez to physically touch home plate after the fact as he was obstructed prior to arriving at home and accordingly prevented from doing so in an unsporting act. jogging around the bases, he and several opponents engage in unsportsmanlike conduct such that opposing player Freddie Freeman, Gerald Laird and Gomez himself are ejected by HP Umpire Paul Nauert and 1B Umpire Doug Eddings (2B Umpire Angel Hernandez, 3B Umpire and Crew Chief Dana DeMuth). Upon the final leg of Gomez's 360-foot journey around the bases, he is confronted by catcher Brian McCann; he responds with unsporting actions of his own and the benches clear, resulting in a brawl, Gomez having to be restrained by teammates before being ushered back to the dugout and into the clubhouse. Batter Gomez never touches home plate, but the Braves do not appeal as the scoreboard changes from 0-0 to 1-0, Milwaukee.

Question: What's the call? Should HP Umpire Paul Nauert rule Gomez out for failing to touch home plate or otherwise deviating from his attempt to advance—if so, does this require an appeal? What rules apply?

This Case Play is of the Group variety and expires at the final out of the final game of the season on Sunday (still expires at the conclusion of play Sunday even if a tiebreaker game results).

Replays indicate after hitting the ball and while rounding the bases, Gomez became engaged in unsporting behavior with members of the Braves, including Freeman and bench player Laird, resulting in a bench clearing incident, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Brewers were leading, 1-0. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 4-0.
