Ejection 032: Gary Darling (4)

HP Umpire Gary Darling ejected New York Mets pitcher D. J. Carrasco for throwing at Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun in the top of the 7th inning of the Brewers-Mets game. With one out and none on, Brewers batter Ryan Braun took a 0-0 fastball for a hit by pitch. Replays indicate the 0-0 pitch was high and inside and hit Braun in the shoulder. During the previous at bat, Brewers' batter Rickie Weeks hit a solo home run. The call is irrecusable.* At the time of the ejection, the Brewers were leading, 8-0. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 8-0.

This is Gary Darling (37)'s fourth ejection of 2012.
Gary Darling now has 8 points in the UEFL (6 Previous + 2 MLB + 0 Irrecusable Call = 8).*
Crew Chief Gary Darling now has 4 points in the UEFL's Crew division (3 Previous + 1 Irrecusable = 4).
*This call is irrecusable under UEFL Rule 6-2-b(5)

Looked like a two-seamer that ran inside. Unless both benches were previously warned, that seems like a quick hook.

i still don't forgive gary darling for his lousy call at shea in 95 when he missed a GW home run call, but even collins in his post game interview said he understood the EJ and had no problem with it....so i can't really fault gary for the hook....

Then in the bottom of inning Collins pulls David Wright so that he wouldnt get dotted. Down side of this decision... does he sit Wright tomorrow cause I would be willing to bet first AB Wright gets one in the numbers. If not tomorrow next series.

Arik, this was a two game set (as pretty much every series was this Monday-Tuesday), so the Brewers and Mets don't play each other tomorrow.

To me, the best part of the whole video was when Darling walked up to the pitcher and took the baseball out of his hand. That's control.

I don't think Carrasco was intentionally throwing at Braun, but I do understand how someone could think that he was. So I don't blame Darling for doing what he did.

Really? Holding a grudge against an umpire for 17 years....get a grip.

i don't think benches could have been previously warned because then collins would have been heaved too

I know and use the "warning" - but what is the warning?! It's a get one free throw at a batter rule! Why does the 1st guy to throw at a batter get off with a warning and everyone else gets tossed? I really like this call - it is proactive and in a blow-out of a game when the previous hitter just hit a home run - the situation says it all. The only time I might waiver on that would be if the pitcher was all over the place.
Great call - I'm going to use that mentality myself (but I would warn both benches after the ejection...)...

I agree with Will. Nearly every single day you can listen to ESPN Radio and hear commentary from someone about "old school baseball" and how one hit batter requires retaliation.

There's nothing nostalgic about plunking a batter. Really nothing nostalgic about it when it ends a career; and based on what I'm seeing in every pro sport, the injuries are becomming more serious these days. NFL gets it. Heck, even hockey is getting it more and more...why not MLB.

I guess that people will have to think twice about hitting a batter when Gary Darling is umpiring.

It's awesome. When the umpire issues a warning for a HBP, the criticism is that should be an ejection, when the umpire ejects for a HBP, the criticism is there should be a warning first.

Isn't Richie Weeks a misspelling?

Jeremy Dircks said...

Yeah something like that! Corrected haha.

Kinda funny a fan is holding a grudge against an umpire for almost 2 decades but if an umpire even looks like he is holding one for 10-15 seconds the umpire is the a**ho**... I wonder what holding a grudge for 2 decades gets ya!!

I'm a Mets fan, and I had to do a search to find out what he was even talking about. I must have blocked the incident from my memory, since it was during the Dallas Green era, a truly dark period in team history.

Carrasco has been designated for assignment, in case anyone's interested.

Gary has been in the bigs for nearly 30yrs, a guy posting on a forum might make a different call. MLB should use Anon posters on any given forum to handle bean ball situatons, they seem to know more than the people on the field.
