Angel Campos' College World Series Ejections of Coastal Carolina

Sunday's College World Series championship finale featured two ejections: Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and 1B coach Matt Schilling by HP Umpire Angel Campos (formerly MLB, now NCAA Division 1). Were the ejections justified or overly aggressive, as the broadcast (and Schnall in a post-game press conference) suggested? Let's break it down.

In the first inning, 1B coach Schilling left the first base coach's box and walked toward home plate to argue balls and strikes after HP Umpire Campos called a strike during a stolen base attempt. Campos then issued a balls/strikes warning to Coastal Carolina (which is how it's done in NCAA baseball).

Chanticleer head coach Schnall (yes, that's their school mascot) then exited the dugout, in his words, to seek clarification on the warning. But when Campos responded it was a balls/strikes warning, Schnall responded by gesturing a number three with his hand while exclaiming, "you missed three pitches."

Because Schnall left his position (leaving the dugout) to argue balls and strikes after directly being warned not to continue arguing balls and strikes, he was ejected from the game.

Interesting note: NCAA Rule 3-6-f states, "If a coach leaves the dugout or their position to argue a ball or strike call (including a half swing or hit-by-pitch), the coach may be ejected without warning."

Schnall then continued arguing while walking toward home plate, eventually engaging with other umpires who had arrived to assist. One umpire fell and upon standing issued Schnall a two-game suspension (which, again, is a college-specific procedure) pursuant to NCAA Rule 2-26 regarding excessive arguing after being ejected: "No team personnel may continue to argue or to continue to excessively express themselves with prolonged actions or offensive language after an ejection. Penalty: An additional two-game suspension."

To conclude, the ejection followed a warning pursuant to the book—my only gripe is Campos' "shoo fly" gesture, which the head coach took offence to (as did I). The shooing gesture is not just an unapproved mechanic, it rarely if ever actually works to diffuse a situation. Instead, a firm stop sign might have done the trick, but considering this coach's aggressive posture regarding "you missed three pitches," I would surmise the ejection would likely have occurred either way.

Case Play 2014-02: Turning Away Interference Double Play

2B Umpire Angel Campos' interference call on the turn of a double play attempt during Friday's Brewers-Nationals game provides us with a quick post-All-Star Break Case Play. This peculiar sequence occurred right out of the gate, in the bottom of the 1st inning with Milwaukee protecting a 1-0 lead. With none out and one on, Nationals batter Anthony Rendon hit a 3-2 fastball on the ground to Brewers shortstop Jean Segura, who threw to second baseman Scooter Gennett as Nationals baserunner R1 Denard Span slid into second base, Span beating the throw, before Gennett threw to first baseman Mark Reynolds ahead of B1 Rendon's arrival.

After Campos' initial and factually correct ruling that Gennett did not tag second base prior to Span's arrival, Span's popped out of his feet-first slide and made contact with Gennett, U2 Campos identifying the interference as Reynolds caught Gennett's throw at first base, good for U1 Vic Carapazza's out call.

In response to Span's post-slide actions, Campos ruled R1 Span out for intentionally interfering with Gennett's attempt to retire B1 at first base, declaring B1 Rendon out for the actions of his teammate, a double play.

After argument from Nationals Manager Matt Williams, 3B Umpire and Crew Chief Bill Miller assembled the umpires: Campos, Carapazza and HP Umpire Chad Fairchild, and after consultation, R1 Span was declared out while B1 Rendon was awarded first base.

Question: Is this the proper call and application of rules? Should both Nationals players have been ruled out, safe, etc.? If so, what runners should be placed (if any) and where (if applicable)? What rule(s) apply?

This Case Play is of the Group variety and expires no earlier than the final out of the final regularly scheduled game Monday, July 21. Participants may receive up to two UEFL points for discussion and solution.

Answer: Pursuant to the Definition of Interference, the ball is dead immediately when interference occurs. As a result, B1's status as a practical manner is irrelevant. If R1 intentionally interfered with a throw, both players are out. If he did not, only B1 is out.

MLB Replay Reviews 394-395: Emmel, Campos (04, 02)

Instant Replay Review overturned 1B Umpire Paul Emmel's out call in the top of the 2nd and 3B Umpire Angel Campos' safe call in the top of the 9th inning of the Tigers-Athletics game. In the 2nd, with one out and one on, Tigers batter J.D. Martinez hit a 0-1 slider from A's pitcher Scott Kazmir on the ground to third baseman Josh Donaldson, who threw to second baseman Eric Sogard to first baseman Brandon Moss as Martinez arrived at first base, baserunner Torii Hunter out at second. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus, Emmel's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 0-0.

In the 9th, with two out and none on, Tigers batter Miguel Cabrera hit a 1-2 changeup from A's pitcher Kazmir on a line drive to left fielder Yoenis Cespedes, who threw to second baseman Sogard as Cabrera slid into the bag. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Athletics Manager Bob Melvin, Campos' ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Tigers were leading, 1-0. The A's ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

``Featured Ejection: With two out and two on (R1, R2) in the 7th inning of the Grizzlies-Bees game, Bees batter Chris Nelson hit a ground ball to Grizzlies first baseman Todd Linden, who threw to Runzler, covering first base. Runzler missed tagging first base with his foot and Nelson was ruled safe upon running through the bag. With runners still moving across the basepaths, Runzler turned to Reyburn and vehemently argued the call while the ball was still live, allowing both R2 Matt Long and R1 Efren Navarro to score. Manager Mariano was ejected arguing the same play. When the argument started, the Grizzlies were leading, 7-6. When the argument ended, the Bees were leading, 8-7. The Bees ultimately won the contest, 9-7.``

Jim Wolf returned to Charlotte after a few days off, serving as first base umpire for Monday, July 22's Indians drubbing of the Knights, 17-1. When Charlotte took a road trip over the weekend, Wolf did not work.

^ Where is Angel Campos? Campos has not appeared in a Minor League box score since a Bees-Grizzlies series in late June; he has not worked a Major League regular season game in 2013. On Thursday, June 27, U1 Campos ejected Bees Manager Keith Johnson. Friday, June 28, 2013 is the last date Campos appeared in the PCL through July 22 [and counting] (Bees-Grizzlies, plate, with U1 Nick Bailey and U3 Greg Stanzak). On Saturday, June 29, Campos' expected U3 spot was occupied by Greg Schoonard (PU Bailey, U1 Stanzak). Schoonard remained at third base on Sunday until Lance Barrett joined Bailey and Stanzak in Las Vegas on Monday, July 1.

A local umpire from the Central Valley, California area, Schoonard has worked games in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and was selected to work the 2013 Babe Ruth World Series. In 2009, Schoonard umpired third base for a four-game 51s-Grizzlies series in Fresno with umpires Mike Muchlinski and Cory Blaser rotating back and forth between home and first (May 4-7, 2009); Muchlinski worked the MLB A's-Mariners game on May 3 while Blaser worked the Round Rock-Isotopes game in Albuquerque with Barry Larson [released post-2012] and Ron McCall [local New Mexico umpire who has worked collegiate games]). Has a midseason retirement befallen Campos a la PCL colleague Stephen Barga?

Ejection 160: Angel Campos (7)

2B Umpire Angel Campos ejected Rockies Manager Jim Tracy for arguing an out call in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Giants-Rockies game. With one out and one on, Rockies batter Carlos Gonzalez hit a 2-2 fastball from Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt on the ground to second baseman Marco Scutaro, who attempted to tag baserunner R1 Josh Rutledge enroute to completing the double play by throwing to first baseman Brandon Belt. Replays indicate Scutaro's glove failed to make contact with Rutledge as he ran by while evidence suggests Rutledge's path of travel did take him out of the baseline pursuant to Rule 7.08(a)(1), the call was correct (see also: UEFL Rule 6-2-b-6-a). The call is now incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Rockies were leading, 6-4. The Rockies ultimately won the contest, 6-5.

1B Umpire Angel Campos ejected Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen for arguing a balk no-call in the top of the 3rd inning of the Marlins-Diamondbacks game. With two out and one on, Diamondbacks pitcher Tyler Skaggs attempted to pick off Marlins baserunner R1 Jose Reyes, Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to second baseman Aaron Hill. Replays indicate Skaggs legally performed his pickoff maneuver, stepping toward first base and not making a natural motion to commit him to the pitch, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 2-2. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 3-2.

HP Umpire Angel Campos ejected Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp for arguing a strike call in the top of the 2nd inning and Dodgers pitcher Joe Blanton for arguing a called ball in the top of the 5th inning of the Dodgers-Pirates game. Prior to the Kemp ejection, with none out and none on, Dodgers batter Andre Ethier took a 1-1 fastball from Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett for a called second strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located below the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants high and over the outside portion of the plate, the call was correct (px value of -0.464; norm_ht value of 0.5538).* Prior to the Blanton ejection, Pirates batter Pedro Alvarez took a 0-0 pitch from Blanton for a called ball (then subsequently homered on the 3rd pitch of the at bat), this was the first pitch of the last batter Blanton faced prior to his removal, then ejection from the game. A Balls/Strikes Exemption has been applied and replays indicate that all pitches thrown by Blanton in the top of the 5th inning were correctly adjudicated, the call was correct. Burnett for a called first ball. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of the plate and below the hollow of the knee (pz value of 1.574; sz_bot of 1.650), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Cardinals were leading, 5-1.
