Referees Tom Mauer (crew chief), Cameron Inouye (R) and Thomas "Tommy" Nunez (R2/umpire) ejected Sparks forward-center Candice Parker for a second technical foul in the 3rd quarter of the Lynx-Sparks game. With 6:58 remaining in the 3rd period, Parker rebounded a missed field goal and attempted to score a put back shot, splitting two defenders to do so. As Parker's lay-up attempt missed and no shooting foul was called, Parker displayed an overt action indicating resentment to the no-call—an air punch—resulting in Parker's first technical foul. Parker continued to violate the WNBA Respect for the Game guidelines by slapping her forearm to simulate a foul and was administered her second technical foul, resulting in disqualification. At the time of the ejection, the Sparks were leading, 43-33. The Sparks ultimately won the contest, 85-84.

Towel Violation: NBA Case Book Addresses Thrown Objects

Midway through the third quarter of Oklahoma City's Game 5 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Thunder guard Derek Fisher attempted a three-point field goal in the corner and in front of the Grizzlies bench when a towel came flying in from off the court, landing several feet inside the three-point arc. The basketball subsequently clanked off the rim and out of the basket.

Thrown towel distracts Fisher.

According to NBA Case Book play 330, if Player A1 is in the act of shooting when B1 throws a shoe in the direction of the ball, A1 shall be awarded points for the type of field goal attempted and B1 shall be charged with a technical foul. The Case Play further states that this same ruling shall apply for any object thrown by any player, coach or trainer either on the court or on the bench and whether or not the thrown object contacts the ball or the shooter.

Relevant Rule cites are 2-III and 12A-V-a, which call for a scored field goal and assessed technical foul.

Which is exactly what calling official Marc Davis did and, upon consultation with crew chief Danny Crawford and fellow referee Jason Phillips, is exactly what call stood on the floor: score the three, call the T.

NBA Ejections (2): Scott Foster, Rodney Mott, Sean Wright

Referees Scott Foster (crew chief), Rodney Mott (R) and Sean Wright (R2/umpire) ejected Bulls guard Joakim Noah and forward Taj Gibson for second technical fouls in the 4th quarter of the Bulls-Heat game. NBA Referee Greg Willard Dead at 54

NBA referee Greg Willard has died nearly 10 months after first being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Greg Willard passed away April 1, 2013.

An official since 1988 who wore the uniform number 57, Willard officiated 1,515 regular season and 134 playoff games, including three NBA Finals after stints with the Continental Basketball Association and college basketball's PCAA (now Big West) and Pac-10 (now Pac-12) conferences. Willard also was affiliated with the Orange County Football Officials Association and attended both Orange Coast College and Long Beach State.

Willard officiated his final NBA contest in October, a pre-season affair between the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers, played in Anaheim, close to Willard's home town of Huntington Beach. He received the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's Spirit of Hope Award later that month.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States with a poor prognosis. Exocrine pancreatic cancer is associated with a one-year survival rate of just 25%, decreasing to 6% after five years. The median survival is about 10 months.

In honor of PCAN and Willard, NBA regional rights-holders such as FOX Sports have raised awareness and funds throughout the season for cancer research; NBA officials have worn purple awareness bracelets throughout the 2012-13 NBA season.

A Southern California native and a married father of three, Willard was 54 years old.

Referees Scott Foster (crew chief), Bennie Adams (R) and Scott Twardoski (R2/umpire) ejected Knicks center Marcus Camby for a second technical foul in violation of the NBA's Respect for the Game guidelines in the third quarter of the Grizzlies-Knicks game. With 8:12 remaining in the third period, Camby was called for a loose ball foul by trail official Adams against Grizzlies center Marc Gasol and reacted in an unsportsmanlike manner which drew a conduct technical foul followed by a second for his reaction to the first. At the time of the ejection, the Knicks were leading, 73-49. The Knicks ultimately won the contest, 108-101.
