MLB Ejections 067-8 - Doug Eddings (Boone, Ausmus)

HP Umpire Doug Eddings ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone and bench coach Brad Ausmus (Replay Review denial because New York took too long to challenge; QOCY) in the top of the 6th inning of the #Yankees-#Rays game. With none out and one on, Yankees batter Paul Goldschmidt swung and missed at a 2-2 changeup from Rays pitcher Shane McLanahan as Yankees baserunner R1 José Caballero attempted to steal second base, thrown out by Rays catcher Nick Fortes to 2B Ben Williamson, ruled out by 2B Umpire Emil Jimenez. Crew Chief Eddings then denied Boone's request to file a manager's challenge, ruling that Boone exceeded the allotted time limit to initiate a challenge. Replays indicate Boone signaled for the challenge by placing his hands on his ears approximately 17 seconds after the conclusion of 2B Umpire Jimenez's out call, the denial call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 2-0. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 3-0.

2B Umpire Brennan Miller ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone (out/catch call by 3B Umpire Ben May; QOCY) in the bottom of the 7th inning of the #BlueJays-#Yankees game. With two out and one on, Yankees batter Jazz Chisholm hit a 1-1 sweeper from Blue Jays pitcher Mason Fluharty on a line drive to center fielder Daulton Varsho, who dove in an attempt to catch the batted ball, ruled an out by 3B Umpire May. Replays indicate the fielder appeared to control the ball in his glove, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 5-3. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 5-4.

MLB Ejection 012 - Will Little (1; Aaron Boone)

HP Umpire Will Little ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone (balk call on Ryan Yarbrough; QOCY) in the top of the 7th inning of the #Angels-#Yankees game. With two out and two on, during Angels batter. Mike Trout's at-bat, Yankees pitcher Yarbrough attempted to pick off Angels baserunner R1 Zach Nieto, but was called for a balk by 1B Umpire Ryan Additon for failing to throw to the base, as first baseman Ben Rice was not at first base when the throw occurred. Replays indicate first baseman Ben Rice received the throw off first base and that the throw itself was not to the base; Additon concluded that Rice did not attempt to retire the runner because of a lack of tag attempt, the call was correct.*

MLB Umpire Manual Interpretation of Official Baseball Rule 6.02(a): "The pitcher shall be charged with a balk if, while in contact with the rubber, they throw to a fielder who is either in front of or behind first or third base and obviously not making an attempt at retiring the runner at that base. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Yankees manager Boone, the foul ball call stood. With none out and the bases loaded, Yankees batter Giancarlo Stanton hit a 0-0 changeup from Angels pitcher Tyler Anderson for a fly ball on the infield, ruled an infield fly. As Angels shortstop Zach Neto attempted to catch the fly ball, he and Yankees baserunner R2 Juan Soto made contact behind second base, resulting in an interference call by 2B Umpire Vic Carapazza. Because the interference occurred during an infield fly, both Soto (interference) and batter Stanton (infield fly rule) were called out for a double play. Replays indicate Soto, while not in contact with second base, interfered with Neto's fielding of a batted ball, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 2-1.

HP Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone (check swing HBP call by 1B Umpire John Tumpane; ejected because Hunter mistook a fan's voice for Boone's; QOCN) in the top of the 1st inning of the #Athletics-#Yankees game. With none out and none on, A's batter Esteury Ruiz attempted to check his swing on a 1-2 slider from Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón, ruled a hit-by-pitch by HP Umpire Wendelstedt and affirmed on appeal as no swing by 1B Umpire Tumpane. After ensuing batter Tyler Nevin took a first-pitch strike, HP Umpire Wendelstedt warned Boone, ejecting him shortly thereafter. Replays indicate that after being warned Boone did not say or gesture toward the umpire; instead, a fan above New York's dugout yelled at Wendelstedt and the umpire ejected Boone for the actions of this fan, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The A's ultimately won the contest, 2-0.
