HP Umpire Mark Wegner ejected White Sox SS Tim Anderson, Guardians 3B Jose Ramirez, Guardians manager Terry Francona, White Sox manager Pedro Grifol, Guardians 3B Coach Mike Sarbaugh, and Guardians pitcher/bench (bullpen) player Emmanuel Clase (fighting) in the bottom of the 6th inning of the #WhiteSox-#Guardians game. With one out and one on, Guardians batter Ramirez hit a 2-2 changeup from White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech on a ground ball to right fielder Oscar Colas, who threw to second base as Ramirez slid in safely. After being called safe by 2B Umpire Malachi Moore, Ramirez took exception to White Sox shortstop Anderson straddling him to make a tag and the two engaged in a fight, resulting in a benches-clearing incident and bona fide brawl. At the time of the ejections, the White Sox were leading, 5-1. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 7-4.

With none out and none on, Anderson took a 1-2 changeup from Giants pitcher Logan Webb for a called third strike. Replays indicate that during delivery of the pitch, Anderson walked out of the batter's box and that prior to the pitch, Webb appeared to come set prior to Anderson being ready and alert to the pitcher in the batter's box; this was an uncalled violation.* Anderson's ejection occurred after ensuing batter Luis Robert's strikeout, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Giants were leading, 2-0. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 7-3.

This is DJ Reyburn (17)'s 1st ejection of 2023.

*t has been pointed out that this was Webb's windup position and after review I agree; however, replays indicate he begins his delivery motion prior to Anderson being ready in the box (Anderson was still in his preparatory motions). This takes this play from "Max Scherzer Rule" territory to potential quick pitch territory. Both actions are illegal and, in this case, both would result in the same penalty: a ball added to the count.

tldr: It was Windup Position, not Set, but the pitcher still violated the rule by starting his delivery before the batter was ready.

With one out and none on, Tigers batter Abreu took a 0-2 fastball from Tigers pitcher Lange for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the pitch was located off inside and struck Abreu on the left elbow. Upon arriving at first base, Abreu attempted to steal second on a pitch in the dirt and while being thrown out by Tigers catcher Eric Haase, slid into shortstop Niko Goodrum, resulting in a benches-clearing incident during which 2B Umpire Tim Timmons appeared to restrain Abreu from fighting, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejections, the White Sox were leading, 8-7. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 8-7.

In the 7th, facing White Sox pitcher Aaron Bummer, Brewers batter Kolten Wong singled, Willy Adames walked, Christian Yelich walked, Avisail Garcia grounded out, Omar Narvaez struck out, and, facing Ryan Burr, Luis Urias walked, and Rowdy Tellez walked. Replays indicate of the 28 callable pitches during the inning, Libka properly officiated 27 (27/28 = 93.1% Accuracy) and that the only incorrect ball call of the inning occurred during Narvaez's at-bat (Narvaez struck out), the call was correct.^ At the time of La Russa's ejection, the Brewers were leading, 3-0.

In the 8th, with one out and none on, White Sox batter Yoan Moncada took a first-pitch slider from Brewers pitcher Hunter Strickland for a called first strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of home plate and at the hollow of the knee (px 0.20, pz 1.33 [sz_bot 1.27 / RAD 1.15 / MOE 1.06]), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Brewers were leading, 7-0. At the time of the ejections, the game was tied, 2-2. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 4-3, in 10 innings.

With one out and two on, Cubs batter Anthony Rizzo hit a 0-1 slider from White Sox pitcher Jeanmar Gomez on the ground to second baseman Yoan Moncada, to shortstop Anderson, who threw wildly to first base as Cubs baserunner R1 Javier Baez slid into second base and collided with Anderson, resulting in a run-producing error, affirmed via Replay Review as the result of a Manager's Challenge by Renteria. Replays indicate Baez fulfilled the requirements for a bona fide slide, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejections, the Cubs were leading, 8-3. The Cubs ultimately won the contest, 8-3.

*Rule 6.01(j) regarding slide interference specifies the four criteria which make a slide bona fide:
(1) Did the runner begin his slide (e.g., contact the ground) before reaching the base? [YES];
(2) Was runner able & attempted to reach the base with a hand or foot? [YES];
(3) Was runner able & attempted to remain on the base (except HP) after completing the slide? [YES];
(4) Did runner slide within reach of the base without changing his pathway for contact? [YES].

As for 5.09(a)(13) Comment (the "deliberate, unwarranted, unsportsmanlike action by the runner in leaving the baseline for the obvious purpose of crashing the pivot man on a double play, rather than trying to reach the base" rule), [the runner] actually did reach and remain on second base, and, as stated above, never actually left the baseline (because he was notably to the right of the line to begin with). Because 5.09(a)(13) Comment instructs umpires to "See Rule 6.01(j)," we come full circle and start over, finding again that [the runner's] slide is bona fide, so on, and so forth.

It's tough to prove willful and deliberate interference when [the runner's] actions check all of the "bona fide" boxes and don't quite meet the criteria about "leaving the baseline" or failing to reach the base.

That said, an unequivocally intentional attempt by the runner to reach out and grab the fielder in order to deprive the defense of the opportunity to turn or complete a double play may be deemed violative.
