MLB Replay Reviews 019, 020: Layne, Wendelstedt (2, 1)

Instant Replay Review confirmed 1B Umpire Jerry Layne's safe call in the bottom of the 3rd and 2B Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt's safe call in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Rockies-Marlins game. In the 3rd, two out and one on, Marlins batter Marcell Ozuna hit a 0-2 fastball from Rockies pitcher Franklin Morales on the ground to second baseman Charlie Culberson, who threw to first baseman Michael Cuddyer as Ozuna arrived at first base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Rockies Manager Walt Weiss, Layne's ruling that Cuddyer did not legally tag first base via a touch with his foot was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Rockies were leading, 4-2.

In the 8th, with two out and one on, Rockies baserunner Christian Yelich attempted to steal second off Marlins pitcher Matt Belisle, catcher Willin Rosario to second baseman DJ LeMahieu. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a request by Rockies Manager Walt Weiss and initiation by Crew Chief Jerry Layne, Wendelstedt's ruling that LeMahieu did not tag Yelich while Yelich was off his base was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 5-5. The Marlins ultimately won the contest, 8-5.

That's embarrassing. Layne (and the replay crew) missed this one. And was not that close, either.

I wouldn't say that at all. Unless I missed it, I don't see a replay that shows that there wasn't daylight between the bag and his foot. Every replay I saw was at an angle. Jerry Layne was six feet away looking right at it; unless there is that view right down the line, that's not going to get overturned.

I am challenging the post determination of correct. The play has no bearing based on points, but this forum that "strives" to preserve a sense of fairness and this call, in my judgment and in fellow commenters' judgment below, was missed. The wording of the post should describe such.

Are split DH's subject to different rotations than single admission ones?

Historically, an AAA has worked 1B in G1, and 3B in G2, so that each HP only works 1 game, with the HP from G1 going back to 2B the following day.

Also, with a surplus of AAA's this year, will certain ones assigned sleeve #'s only be subject to said #'s upon an actual assignment?

Just screwed Roenis Elias out of a no-hitter!

This guy is a tool.

Instant Replay Reviews may not be challenged. We are bound by rule to reflect the Replay Official's ruling. If a call stands or is confirmed, the original, on-field call is considered correct. If a call is overturned, the original ruling is incorrect.

He's been awful behind plate 4/3/14-inaccurate in his calls and inconsistent to boot. Not surprising he's a rookie.

I've NEVER taken the time to look up an umpire online before, but holy cow, this guy is obviously not paying attention in what must be his first MLB game behind the plate! If the Mariners end up losing this game (3 Apr 14), it's on Barber's head.

Has no idea where the strike zone is. ..

He needs to go back to the pet store and face his nemesis the eel-(see story above) he's clearly out matched by the strike zone.

same this game just pisses me off go back to pet store u clearly cant call a game the mariners should of one the game!

Worst ump'ed game I've ever seen. Worst strike zone I have ever seen, cost a rookie a no-hitter in his ML debut, cost the M's a run because of it, and had a 5 minute delay to confirm an obvious call. As a result of the delay Elias didn't get sent back out despite only throwing 80 pitches. Seriously, he called for a review of a call HE made. He reviewed his own obvious call and it took 5 minutes! Even the A's announcers took one look at the replay and said "Yeah, he was out." Absolutely terrible for the Mariners and the A's.
