Ejections: Brian O'Nora (1)

HP Umpire Brian O'Nora ejected Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire for arguing a reviewed and overturned: foul ball call in the bottom of the 1st inning of the Yankees-Twins game. With two out and one on, Twins batter Justin Morneau hit a 1-0 fastball from Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia for a home run call by 1B Umpire Jim Wolf. After instant replay review, the umpires overturned the call to a foul ball. Replays indicate the ball crossed into and exited the playing field in foul territory [in front of the pole], the call was correct.*^ At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 8-4.

This is Brian O'Nora (7)'s first ejection of 2011.
Brian O'Nora now has 4 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 4).
Brian O'Nora is owned as a Secondary Umpire by jeruhmed, who is now tied for 27th place in the UEFL with 7 points.
*This call is correct per UEFL Rule 6.b.ii.g.
^Brian O'Nora is listed as the calling umpire under UEFL Rule 6.b.iii.a.2., as O'Nora was the acting crew chief during this contest.

This is the 159th ejection of 2011.
This is the 76th Manager ejection of 2011.
This is Ron Gardenhire's fifth ejection of 2011. All 2011 Gardenhire ejections are associated with  a 'correct' QOC.
Gardenhire is one umpire short of the "ejection cycle" (Ejections by... HP: 3, 2B: 1, 3B: 1).
This is the first ever instant replay review ejection in Major League Baseball.

This is getting kinda freaky. This is yet another ejection where this website talks about a subject in the morning (in this case, controversial calls with instant replay), and there's an ejection that night. So far we've seen this "UEFL jinx" when there was that posted interview with Hunter Wendelstedt (he had two ejections that night) and on two separate occasions when the twitter account tweeted about Greg Gibson's seasonal ejections (both times, he ejected someone later that night).

I assume Ron watched his own replay on the clubhouse television. Or maybe had someone watch the TV monitor for him. Either way, this wasn't a quick review. They took their time, and I presume, they did it to get the play right.

I wish Gardenhire new as much about managing as he does about umpiring. It's really amazing to watch Gardenhire argue about things, there's nothing he can do about. He rarely gets ejected over pitches. It's always something like this, or he'll come out and argue how many bases a runner should get on an award, like the umpires can ignore the rule book. I think it really sets a bad example for the team. I think players lose focus, either the pitcher sitting in the dugout longer, or the next batter has to wait for the show to stop. Plus, it sends the message: hey, you guys can win without me when I get ejected in the 1st. I wish I could get sent home from work after 5 minutes for arguing with the boss, and yet still get paid.
And Gardy worked for Tom Kelly, who wouldn't say shit, if he had a mouthful.
Sucks to be a Twins fan rite now. Gardy winning manager of the year was the worst thing that could have happened, we'll have to deal with him for a minimum of 5 more years.

Ron was tossed bY Gerry Davis arguing a replay last year in Celevland arguing a replay...but it was not noted in the box score.

The play, as I recall, in Cleveland was called a double and confirmed by replay.

Edwin Rodriguez was tossed by Joe West also last year after arguing a reviewed home run. That one was official.

As a Twins fan it makes me sad when Gardy gets tossed for arguing when he's wrong. Sometimes skippers get tossed for being right. The fact the umps even went to look at a replay should be considered a minor victory. Still love Gardy, but agree with much of the above posters critisms. The umps got this one right.
