MLB Ejection 026 - Carlos Torres (2; Miguel Cairo)

HP Umpire Carlos Torres ejected Orioles infield coach Miguel Cairo (untimely/denied ABS challenge; QOCN) in the top of the 3rd inning of the #Athletics-#Orioles game. With none out and none on, Athletics batter Jeff McNeil took a 0-2 sinker from Orioles pitcher Chris Bassitt for a called first ball. Anticipating a strike three call, Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo began to throw the ball to third base (around the horn) before stopping and requesting an ABS challenge by tapping his head, which Torres denied. Replays indicate the challenge was requested by means of a head-tap once Basallo realized the pitch had been called a ball, not a strike; the challenge was timely, the call was incorrect.* Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of home plate and above the midpoint (px 0.18, pz 3.42 [sz_top 3.21]), but balls/strikes QOC was not the reason for ejection. At the time of the ejection, the A's were leading, 1-0. The Orioles ultimately won the contest, 2-1.

This is Carlos Torres (37)'s 2nd ejection of 2026.
*QOC for this ABS denial refers to the umpire's decision to the deny the challenge request.
Challenges must be made: "Immediately after the pitch (roughly within two seconds). If there is an ensuing play (such as a checked-swing appeal or a play involving a runner), the challenge may be made at the conclusion of the play."
