Quickie - Wolcott as the Runner Turns

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo argued to no avail with 1B Umpire Quinn Wolcott after Arizona batter-runner Alek Thomas was tagged out by Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade, having turned and made a move to advance toward second base before stopping to retreat back toward first base.

Official Baseball Rule 5.09(b)(11) states that a runner is out when the runner: "fails to return at once to first base after overruning or oversliding that base. If they attempt to run to second, they are out when tagged."

Accordingly, U1 Wolcott determines that batter-runner Thomas briefly attempted to run to second, putting him in jeopardy of being tagged out when he failed to "return at once" to first base.
