MLB Ejection 012: John Tumpane (1; David Ortiz)

HP Umpire John Tumpane ejected Red Sox DH David Ortiz for arguing a check swing (strike) call made by 3B Umpire Jerry Meals in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Orioles-Red Sox game. With none out and none on, Ortiz attempted to check his swing on a 1-1 curveball from Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez. Play was referred to and affirmed by the UEFL Appeals Board (8-1-0); replays indicate Ortiz attempted to strike the pitch, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Orioles were leading, 5-3. The Orioles ultimately won the contest, 8-3.

Tumpane was behind the plate due to an injury to original HP Umpire Paul Emmel, who left the game in the bottom of the 4th inning. According to Orioles Manager Buck Showalter, Emmel suffered a leg injury during the early innings.
