Ejections: Chad Fairchild (3, 4)

HP Umpire Chad Fairchild ejected Rays Manager Joe Maddon for arguing a check swing call made by 3B Umpire Jim Reynolds and Rays Bench Coach Dave Martinez for Unsportsmanlike-NEC in the top of the 11th inning of the Red Sox-Rays game. For the Maddon ejection, with none out and three on, Red Sox batter Josh Reddick attempted to check his swing on a 2-2 slider from Rays pitcher Jake McGee. Replays indicate Reddick did not appear to have attempted to strike the pitch, the call was correct. Reddick would ultimately strike out to end his at bat. For the Martinez ejection, Red Sox batter Marco Scutaro popped out to Rays catcher Kelly Shoppach to end the top of the 11th inning. Martinez alleged Scutaro tossed or threw his bat in the direction of Shoppach in an attempt to distract or injure Shoppach, in an unsuccessful attempt at preventing him from completing the put out. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Red Sox ultimately won the contest, 1-0, in 16 innings.

These are Chad Fairchild (75)'s third and fourth ejections of 2011.
Chad Fairchild now has 9 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (2 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call + 2 MLB + 1 Correct Call [Crewmate] = 9).
Chad Fairchild was not drafted in 2011.

These are the 124th and 125th ejections of 2011.
This is the 61st Manager ejection of 2011.
This Joe Maddon's fifth ejection of 2011, which is tied for the lead amongst all Managers.

Fairchild just got Bench Coach Dave Martinez too

Those damn Red Sox. The play is damn Yankees, but as far as I'm concerned, damn Red Sox is just as appropriate. Why is it that the Red Sox have been involved in so many fights and unsporting acts and plays in the past season?

Damn Red Sox.

@jhagen88... so did we ;)

I'm calling it now, there will be at least one more ejection this game.

Out of curiosity, is there any reason why Scutaro was not tossed? The aerial angle shows that the bat basically happened to take an unfortunate bounce towards Shoppach (and wasn't actually all that close to him at all), but shouldn't throwing the bat like that have gotten him an ejection regardless of where he threw it?

(Also, the video link is wrong, it's linking to the PIT/HOU Mills ejection.)

I agree with BABACop, even though obviously not upset at anybody but himself, throwing the bat with that much force, doesn't matter where it goes. Especially since it took an unfavorable bounce towards Shoppach, though not what I would call close to. Scutaro should have been tossed.

@9:13 Anon, think you are a bit biased on that, not saying the Red Sox havn't had their share of incidences, can't say it's a whole lot more than others though.

Maddon (Rays), Mills (Astros), and Quade (Cubs) have been some of the biggest crybabies this season. Enough already!

"The most cowardly thing in the world is blaming mistakes upon the umpires. Too many managers strut around on the field trying to manage the umpires instead of their teams."

Watched most of this game, until I finally gave in the 13th.

I thought Fairchild had a great game...and it was nice to hear the ESPN guys actually complimenting him and Andy Fletcher for their work.

Didn't Wedge get tossed in Seattle on Sunday as well?

Lindsay said...

Regarding Wedge, the ejection has not been reported in the box score as of yet, so we have no official ejection (and no corresponding points distribution). UEFL Rule 10 discontinued the "Unofficial Ejection" write-ups.

UEFL Rule 7.b.: "In all other instances of disputed information, the listing in the official box score shall prevail. Only ejections documented in the specific contest's box score shall be deemed official ejections. All other ejections shall be deemed unofficial ejections. The "box score" criterion shall override any other criteria ordinarily applied to determining ejection information."

I agree maddon was pissed off, but when you argue with the umpire like that way after a play happened, you heard what your guys said in the dugout, and go out there to show your team you have their back. Not to be a crybaby

So why exactly did martinez get ejected, he barely walked out of the dugout. Surely saying he threw that bat at my guy wouldn't get you run that fast

See this is where they need field mics that pick up like they do with the Marlins or even the Brewers or Diamondbacks.

If I heard right, they did have a field mic last night on ESPN, which picked up Fairchild uttering ``Son of a bitch'' after Ortiz's bat smacked him on a follow-through earlier in the game.

(If it were me taking that hit to my arm, I might have uttered something worse).

It's a wonder that David Price wasn't ejected from this game either. After seeing the video it clearly shows him yelling at the umpiring crew from the bench which is something that has already gotten him ejected for twice this season. With that kind of consistent behavior I would think he will be earning a reputation with the umps that would not be beneficial to him every 5th day.

The Wedge ejection was reported by the box scores on ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. Does it have to be from MLB?

Jeremy Dircks said...

Anonymous, in short, yes. The official box score is the ruling box score. ESPN's nor Yahoo! Sports's box score are the official box score.

Here's the Fairchild video, pretty funny

Whatever Martinez did or didn't say, I would have supported a hook for Scutaro. It's one thing to toss your bat back to the dugout. But he turned and threw his bat, and in a different direction. Yes, an ugly bounce, but he almost hit someone, and should never have thrown the bat to begin with.
