MLB Ejection 089: Bill Welke (2; Mike Redmond)

HP Umpire Bill Welke ejected Marlins Manager Mike Redmond for arguing an out call in the top of the 4th inning of the Marlins-Cardinals game. With one out and one on, Marlins batter Nathan Eovaldi hit a 1-0 fastball from Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly to second baseman Matt Carpenter, who threw home to catcher Tony Cruz in an attempt to retire advancing baserunner R3 Adeiny Hechavarria on the fielder's choice.
Redmond argues with PU for 2nd time in 2 days.
Replays indicate Hechavarria's foot contacted home plate before the tag was applied, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Marlins were leading, 4-2. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 5-4.

This is Bill Welke (52)'s 2nd ejection of 2013.
Bill Welke now has -4 points in the UEFL (-2 + 2 + -4 = -4).
Crew Chief Fieldin Culbreth now has 1 point in the UEFL's Crew Division (1 + 0 Incorrect Call = 1).

This is the 89th ejection of 2013.
This is the 41st Manager ejection of 2013.
This is the Marlins' 2nd ejection of 2013, T-3rd in the NL East (ATL, NYM 4; MIA PHI, WAS 2).
This is Mike Redmond's 2nd ejection of 2013 and first since June 22, 2013 (Mark Wegner; QOC = Y).
This is Bill Welke's first ejection since June 2, 2013 (Terry Francona; QOC = N).

Welke was out of position.

2 ejections in a row that they don't even show. Damn it mlb.

Wow, this was pretty close but not that close. Welke, like Angel H., is certainly not one of MLB's better umpires it seems...

Did MLB tell umpires they can't go on one knee anymore? Kellogg and Timmons have both changed how the stand at the plate.

Totally not related but check out CB Bucknor getting pranked by some kid (at 3:00):

Two words:
INSTANT REPLAY!

For the record, Welke supports instant replay.

He missed the call. Whether F2 attempted to block the plate, to me, in this case, is irrelevant. Throws from the right side of the infield, almost, if not always, indicate a swipe tag. He should have been on the third base line extended, and the play 'ate' him up. Had he been properly positioned, he would have realized the tag was late.

I get the two Welke's mixed up....Is this the same one that butchered that call at first base last year (Dodgers/Rockies)? Nice guy, but it seems he gets caught with his pants down quite a bit. Is he part of the same crew that botched the HR call (and was fined for it)? Might have been two different ones, and I don't have time to look right now.....

Of course, we all make mistakes....I make enough to want to retract my criticism. While he is not one of the better umpires IMO, he did not butcher this. Tough call...

Just wondering what he thought he saw. Did he see the left leg go up and over the plate (missing the right leg sliding across the plate) and then the tag hitting before the butt got to the plate?

Not trying to justify it or say it was anywhere close to right. I just wish I knew what he was thinking so I can send this to my umpires as a learning moment.
