MLB Ejection 146: Paul Nauert (2; Justin Upton)

HP Umpire Paul Nauert ejected Braves LF Justin Upton for arguing a strike one call in the top of the 6th inning of the Braves-Cardinals game. With one out and one on, Upton took a 0-0 fastball from Cardinals
Upton was restrained after his ejection.
pitcher Adam Wainwright for a called first strike before grounding out and on a 0-1 cutter. Replays indicate the first pitch was located thigh high and over the outer edge of home plate (px 0.617; sz_bot 1.570, pz 1.812), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Cardinals were leading, 1-0. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

This is Paul Nauert (39)'s second ejection of 2013.
Paul Nauert now has 8 points in the UEFL (4 + 2 MLB + 2 Y = 8).
Crew Chief Dana DeMuth now has 9 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (8 + 1 Correct Call = 9).

This is the 146th ejection of the 2013 MLB season.
This is the 66th player ejection of 2013. Prior to ejection, Upton was 0-3 in the contest.
This is the Braves' 8th ejection of 2013, T-1st in the NL East (ATL, WAS 8; NYM 6; PHI 4; MIA 2).

That's brutal, why throw him out?. Correct call know da..... Why throw him out when he's running to first it's almost like he went out of his way to start the fight. Paul naurt I'm talking about. Some other bafoon will argue with me on this thread. These umps have rabbit ears. You can't tell me he deserved to be tossed, with the video being shown its inconclusive with the ejection being handed out. Plus the upton. Brothers in there careers so far are really racking up the ejections

After he grounded out, Upton clearly yelled "Fuck you" to Nauert. Nauert then says, "That's it." Then, "See ya." When Upton comes at Nauert, you can clearly see Nauert telling him why he was ejected. I watched this live and on the replay with the sound up, you can hear everything clear.

Nauert rarely ejects. In fact, he is a bit of a doormat. Am glad he did here. Upton sniped him, and Nauert took care of business.

Hey Bryan,

Use some common sense on this one man. Rabbit ears is an asinine reference. Umpires aren't actively listening to catch some guy yelling at them. These players want to be heard and therefore yell things loud enough for the umpire to hear them.

I love the fact announcers said umpires knowing how bad the braves out field is he shouldn't of ejected not his fault have you players stay under control

Lindsay said...

Um, no. Upton DID NOT say F*** you! He simply said F***! And it should be clear to anyone with any sense or any awareness that he was frustrated with grounding out and not driving in a run. Ump show...plain and simple.

Lindsay said...

Really. I watched Bill Hohn stand and stare into many a dugout during his brutal season a few years back. Doug Eddings is another that has rabbit ears.

Lindsay said...

That's not what they said. Listen to it again.

Lindsay said...

Its pretty much what he said. he didn't need to use those words exactly

Lindsay said...

He said "knowing the Braves outfield situation, that hurts." There was no mention of whether that should have mattered in the ejection.

Lindsay said...

Either you're a Braves fan or hearing impaired. Regardless of why, Upton clearly added the "you." It is clearly audible, and Nauert certainly heard it. Given the rarity of a Nauert ejection, there is no chance he ejects without the "you."

And I am hardly one who blindly sides with the umpires. Just ask the slappies who defend Jerry Meals.

Lindsay said...

Seriously you still on this crap Jake? As i said... before he didn't say the way i said does not mean what i said is fact of the matter.

Lindsay said...

So there is no chance you misheard?

Lindsay said...

Huh?

Lindsay said...

I'm with Jake here. The announcer's statement could be interpreted in more than one way (you obviously interpreted it as a statement against the umpire).

I interpreted that with the Braves down 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Justin getting ejected hurts their chances to win the game as he would have seen another at-bat. Most likely in the top of the 9th, to boot.

Lindsay said...

I like how Softballumpire says, "Its [sic] pretty much what he said", when that wasn't even close to what he said. It's not even paraphrasing.

Does anyone have the video of Upton's at bat in 3rd inning when he was called out on strikes?

I heard there was an exchange between Upton and Nauert in that at bat and think it could shed some light as to why Upton was ejected so quickly and seemingly unfairly in the 6th inning.

Lindsay said...

2 ejections in 1 year for Nauert. That's gotta be a record for him.

Lindsay said...

I think what some people are missing here is that if he said fuck you loud enoug for the umpire to hear he said it loud enough for the catcher to hear.

It is a cut and dry enough situation that the umpire has to eject to maintain his credibility with the other team.

Just because a player has his back to the umpire when he says forbidden things doesn't give the umpire the right to let those thing go without proper punishment being administered.

Lindsay said...

Two ejections for Paul Nauert? In one season? Unreal!

Lindsay said...

Generally an umpire will let one of those go if there is little else said and the player is not visually showing the umpire up. Short of "your terrible" or something to that effect it usually takes a bit more than 2 words to get ejected.

Lindsay said...

Nope he had 5 in 2006 according to retrosheet.

Lindsay said...

A MLB umpire would not let "you're terrible" go. Also show me proof that he only said fuck. I agree with YEEZUS that Nauert is kind of a doormat. So if he ejected him Im sure he said more than just an F bomb. I do think the ejection had something to do with the 3rd inning at bat that everyone is talking about that I did not see.

Lindsay said...

That is why i said "short of 'your terrible'' meaning that those are 2 words that would get you ejected. My statement is meant to imply that generally the only way to get ejected for 2 words is if you are calling the umpire terrible, bad, or something to that effect. It is unusual for a player to be ejected for simply dropping an F bomb or even a "F*** You" without saying anything else or visually showing up the umpire.

As for the 3rd inning I am the one who asked if anyone had the video in another comment as I have not seen that either but heard that something had happened.

Lindsay said...

Speculation (and of course, once again) contentious banter aside, I'd like to know for sure what was said. Seems like a tough toss. That being said, it seems both Upton brothers need behavior modification of some sort.

Lindsay said...

I didn't hear "Fuck You" either. I heard one word "Fuck" as a guy was running to first base. Think this was an unnecessary ejection.

Lindsay said...

With that in mind, umpires would be ejecting MLB players left and right. The F bomb is dropped on a regular basis when players fly out or ground out, etc. How many of them are really ejected??
This looks like a poor ejection to me...

Lindsay said...

That sounds like a fight to me lol.

Lindsay said...

I think you missed the personal part of his comment. An f bomb doesn't get you ejected in pro ball but following it with a second person personal pronoun will usually get you dumped.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt Mike and assume you simply mis-read my post.

Lindsay said...

So I read your first line again. Missed the "you" part of it. But there is debate as to whether that was said or not. Some are saying it was; others are saying it wasn't.

Lindsay said...

True. If he didn't say "you" it is a soft ejection. Basically a cumulative "I'm just tired of you" ejection. I'm hoping that isn't the case.

Lindsay said...

Only one of those ejections was a HBP ejection (Ramon Ortiz). The others were arguing balls and strikes.

Lindsay said...

Have you ever strapped it on?

Lindsay said...

What does "fair" have to do with it?

Lindsay said...

I read your post wrong. My bad.

Lindsay said...

WRONG:

MLB.TV with the Ballpark only audio feed - with headphones on:

Upton DEFINITELY said :F**k you - the 'you' comes just as his bat hits the ground. Without the announcers, in stereo with headphones, the 'you' is clearly audible. Good night, Mr Upton. Upton also used the F word about twenty times in 30 seconds after the ejection.

You can also hear Nauert tell Freddy in the course of the post EJ discussion, something to the effect of "Thats not MY problem!" Freddy was probably complaining abut his OF shortage.

That ballpark only audio alone almost makes the $100 for MLB.tv worth it.

Lindsay said...

see my post above ^ the naked audio is proof!

Lindsay said...

see my post at the top - everybody on the field and on the box seats could hear it

Lindsay said...

You're a liar. He did not add the you. If you keep insisting that he did, YOU need to be ejected.

Lindsay said...

Can you record that audio feed with Audacity or a similar program and upload it somewhere temporarily?

Lindsay said...

The raw audio does NOT lie

What Upton did was an old ballplayer trick - you say the F***, then you throw the bat down as you say 'you', so the bat hitting the ground masks it - except Neuart heard it. I have umpired for over 20 years, and I know all the little tricks the idiots try to pull.

Lindsay said...

Ok cbdees , if your an umpire in this situation, how would you approach this ejection? If I was naurt I would not eject him unless he turns around from walking at first base and argues or throws hit equipment. I don't like an umpire eject a player for saying a little fbomb. Can't an umpire tune it out and just move on! I understand there has to be eticut in this game, but there is nothing to loss if your am umpire, it part of the game, players will argue Everyday. Ted Barrett who tossed Reyes few days ago, he let him have his say didn't toss him and ejected him after helmet, I know these are two different umpires, but Barrett I would think if he was in naurt shoes would not toss him, and these two umps are well mannered quite umps as far as career ejections and arguments.

Lindsay said...

Woah. What might you be referring to?

Lindsay said...

And now for something totally different... Clint Fagan just finished behind the plate for a 7+ hour game. I'd be interested to know his numbers.

Lindsay said...

You are beyond delusional if you think that a player who is trying to drive in a run, on a struggling offense, would have the presence of mind to purposely time his bat toss to coincide with the last word of a retort directed at an umpire so as not to be heard.

Since my last comment got pulled, I will reiterate that you are obviously hearing things, like people who used to listen to songs backwards for hidden messages. You can make it sound like anything you want, and you obviously are. I've listen to the same audio, and he did not add the you.

Lindsay said...

no - I get MLB.tv through my Roku streaming device

Lindsay said...

He said "Fuck me," not "Fuck you." I heard it quite clearly on my headphones, and the other players all said the same thing.

Lindsay said...

There are ZERO MLB, MiLB, or D1 umpires that would not eject for a player saying "f*** you" to them. This "visually showing up the umpires" thing is an announcer/fan line that is meaningless.

Lindsay said...

There are f-bombs in games above the high school level every day and umpires ignore them. I HIGHLY doubt that Nauert would eject for a simple f-bomb by itself. These guys hear f-bombs all season long.

Lindsay said...

#fanboy gets his feelings hurt from the #umpshow.

Lindsay said...

Sorry this is late.

I was watching the feed on MLB tv and they replayed the incident during the next batter. He very clearly had a "you" after the "fuck"...not that this is proof or able to be substantiated, but it was clear enough that my wife came in from the next room and asked, "how did 'fuck you' get through the censors?"

What made me laugh in audio was I assume Nauert yelling twice "Boom, you're done. Boom, you're done" as Upton was about 2/3 the way down the line.
