MLB Ejection 153 - Gabe Morales (3; Skip Schumaker)

HP Umpire Gabe Morales ejected Marlins manager Skip Schumaker (strike three call to Xavier Edwards; QOCY) in the bottom of the 8th inning of the #Diamondbacks-#Marlins game. With one out and one on, Edwards took a 2-2 slider from Diamondbacks pitcher Justin Martinez for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the outer edge of home plate and thigh-high (px -0.52, pz 1.78 [sz_bot 1.38 / RAD 1.26]), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Diamondbacks were leading, 8-7. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 10-8.

MLB Ejection 124 - Rob Drake (1; Skip Schumaker)

HP Umpire Rob Drake ejected Marlins manager Skip Schumaker (balls/strikes) in the bottom of the 8th inning of the #Mets-#Marlins game. After Jesús Sánchez grounded out to end the inning, Schumaker exited the dugout to argue balls and strikes with HP Umpire Drake, resulting in his ejection. Replays indicate of the nine callable pitches in the half-inning immediately preceding ejection, Drake officiated all nine correctly (9/9 = 100% accuracy), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Mets were leading, 5-3. The Mets ultimately won the contest, 6-4.

MLB Ejection 013 - Laz Diaz (1; Skip Schumaker)

HP Umpire Laz Diaz ejected Marlins manager Skip Schumaker (pitch clock violation no-call; QOCY) in the bottom of the 8th inning of the #Giants-#Marlins game. With two out and none on, following Marlins batter Avisaíl García's strikeout, Giants manager Bob Melvin visited the mound to replace pitcher Ryan Walker. Giants left-handed relief pitcher Tyler Rogers, warming in the bullpen, entered the playing field and began jogging toward the infield, only for Melvin to then signal with his right arm that he wanted a right-handed pitcher instead. Rogers returned to the bullpen as relief pitcher Camilo Doval (having since warmed up where Rogers had been pitching from moments earlier) stepped onto the warning track. After subsequent Marlins batter Nick Gordon took a first-pitch strike from Doval to make the count 0-1, Schumaker was ejected arguing the count should be 1-1 due to a pitch clock violation on San Francisco for taking too long to provide a substitute pitcher.

The pitch timer rules state that when a substitute pitcher is called into the game, the pitching change timer is started upon the umpire's signal to the bullpen. However, regardless of how much time has expired, if the substitute pitcher steps onto the warning track with under two minutes remaining on the clock, then the timer is automatically reset to 2:00, which is what the clock operator in Miami did here. Furthermore, Official Baseball Rule 5.10(j) pertaining to substitutions states that a pitcher not yet announced is not considered into the game until "they take their place on the pitcher’s plate"; there is no mechanism for a pitch clock violation in this scenario provided the pitcher concluded his on-field warmups timely, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Giants were leading, 4-3. The Giants ultimately won the contest, 4-3.

With none out in the 5th, Garcia took called first and second strikes from Reds pitcher Brandon Williamson for called first and second strikes. Replays indicate the pitches were located over the inner edge of home plate and above the hollow of the knee (strike one: px -0.77, pz 1.93 [sz_bot 1.65]; strike two: px -0.72, pz 2.26), the call was correct.* At the time of Garcia's ejection, the Reds were leading, 4-1. In the 8th, Schumaker was ejected during an injury mound visit with Marlins pitcher Tanner Scott. All pitches during the inning were properly officiated, the call was correct. MLB Ejections 070-1 - Hunter Wendelstedt (2-3; MIA x2)

1B Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ejected Marlins catcher Jacob Stallings and manager Skip Schumaker (pitch clock violation by HP Umpire Marvin Hudson; QOCN) in the bottom of the 8th inning of the #Marlins-#Giants game. With none out and none on, Giants batter JD Davis took a 3-2 fastball from Marlins pitcher Bryan Hoeing for a called fourth ball. Replays indicate HP Umpire Hudson signaled "Time" as Hoeing was in the midst of his delivery to home plate and that, prior to that, batter Davis failed to be alert to the pitcher prior to the eight-second mark on the pitch timer; this should have been a pitch timer violation on the batter, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejections, the Giants were leading, 4-3. The Giants ultimately won the contest, 4-3.

*In postgame comments, Crew Chief Hudson stated, "He [Stallings] stood up and called time with about three seconds left. [He] never mentioned at that point about going to the mound. At that point, it’s a violation on him. According to Stallings, however, "[1B Umpire Wendelstedt] kept telling me I’m not allowed to call time."
According to Schumaker, "Davis was not engaged for me. Stallings was trying to call timeout to show that he was not engaged and it should be a strike. He’s trying to call timeout. He’s allowed to call timeout to go run out to talk to the pitcher. He wasn’t granted it. And then we saw the umpire call timeout with his hands up. He [Stallings] said he [Hudson] called the timeout. That was the disagreement. It was still Ball 4."
