Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson, Schrieber's ruling that Medica tagged first base prior to Goldschmidt's touch arrival was upheld, the call was correct. At the time of the instant replay review, the Padres were leading, 1-0. The contest ultimately ended in a tie, 2-2, in 10 innings.

Two plays later, Phillies batter Ronny Cedeno hit a 1-0 pitch from Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson to shortstop Danny Santana, who threw to catcher Chris Herrmann for an attempted tag on R3 Mayberry attempting to score. Upon instant replay review as the result of an argument by Gardenhire and initiation by crew chief Bob Davidson, Davidson's ruling that R3 Mayberry touched home plate prior to Herrmann applying a tag was upheld, the call was correct. Meanwhile, baserunner R1 Maxwell attempted to advance to third base and became involved in a rundown between second and third base. As Brewers shortstop Hector Gomez attempted to field a throw and tag Maxwell, the baseball fell out of his glove and rolled directly towards third base where it was picked up Hand, covering third, who attempted to tag Maxwell as Maxwell placed his foot on third base. Upon instant replay review as the result of an argument by Roenicke and initiation by Barrett, Hoberg's ruling that Maxwell's foot stepped on third base prior to Halton applying a tag was upheld, the call was correct.
