Ejections: Mike Estabrook (2)

1B Umpire Mike Estabrook ejected Nationals Interim Manager John McLaren for arguing a safe call in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Nationals-White Sox game. With two out and none on, White Sox batter Paul Konerko hit a 2-0 fastball from Nationals pitcher Henry Rodriguez to shortstop Ian Desmond to first basemen Michael Morse. Estabrook ruled Konerko out, but after conferring, overturned the call and ruled Morse failed to tag Konerko. Replays indicate no tag was applied to Konerko, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Nationals were leading, 2-0. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 9-5, in 14 innings.

This is Mike Estabrook (83)'s second ejection of 2011.
Mike Estabrook now has 10 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (5 Previous + 3 AAA + 2 Correct Call = 10).
Mike Estabrook was not drafted in 2011.
*Mike Estabrook is the calling umpire under UEFL Rule 6.b.iii.a.1.

This is the 85th ejection of 2011.
This is the 45th manager ejection of 2011.
This is John McLaren's first ejection of 2011 and first game as Interim Manager of the Nationals.
**The post game box score has been updated and now credits Estabrook, not Jeff Nelson, with the ejection of McLaren.

Haha! McLaren gets tossed in his 1st game as Nationals interim manager!

He just couldn't wait for the opportunity!

McLaren has been scum for years. As soon as Riggleman left, John had to put on his other dirtball hat. Estabrook didn't pop no cherry with this one.

I thought for sure McLaren punches Mike but as he admitted it was his "finger" that touched him.

Sure looked like a closed fist..

McLaren charged out like Brett in the pine tar game. Then he clearly contacts Estabrook's hat while gesturing wildly.

What an absurd outburst. Close play; after conference, I think the right call was made. Nothing warranted a charge like that.

And to make a general observation/judgment after watching 20 or so Nats games the last couple seasons, Desmond is a prick.

Great hustle by Nelson to get in perfect position. I hope Estabrook told McLaren to worry about his shortstop's fielding & throwing, & let *them* umpire the game!

The fact that Estabrook is a AAA Fill In, Nelson wanted to move in right away to discuss it... if that was Tschida who made that call, Nelson would have probably not been so agressive innitiating the conference. I think he may have gone off Konerko's reaction... who is one of those guys that if he complains, you may have screwed something up.

Regardless, it was a bastard of a call because having to watch for pulled foot & swipe tag very close to each other. Personally, the fact that Estabrooke ruled an out means he must have seen some type of tag... atleast possibly getting the pant leg. On this type of play (out to safe call), at that base (1B) & at this level (MLB - 4 man crew), I think they took the smelly end of the stick to OVERTURN an out call.

If that was Tschida who made the OUT call, he would not have asked for help and they probably never get together. If Tschida (the CC) would have positioned himself as well as Estabrook did, then he would have told Guillen that he had a great look at the play and NOT going for help... which a lot of guys still subscribe to this thought for plays at 1B in a 4 man system.

What are you talking about?! The call was dead WRONG!! You can see the glove push the leg. I can only guess that you are a White Sox fan upset that your team got a 14th inning BEAT DOWN!!

One of the things you watch for on a swipe is a "change of direction" of the glove, however slight it might be...the law of physics says that when a runner going full tilt hits or is it by something, there is "an equal and opposite reaction"

Now, I realize we're not looking at the effin' Zapruder film here, but I do not see the glove stop, change direction or anything...it keeps going in the direction it was headed, like it didn't touch anything. Great hustle and positioning by Nelson allowed him to see this.

Really bad job by McLaren for having this kind of melt down, including contact with Estabrook. Easily a 3 gamer, maybe more.

And this just in...Conroy dumped Matt Kemp of the Dodgers for arguing balls and strikes...although MLB.com first identified him as "Chris Conway".

Estabrook didnt asked for help, what in the hell is Nelson coming down the line and thinking that he needs to intiate a meeting over the call. If Estabrook had doubt in his mind about the call, then he should be the one that intiates the conference, not Nelson.

Did you hear Rob Dibble go off on that, oh no, thats FP. Well at least the Nationals lead the league in one thing, "idiot announcers", with Carpenter the MVI.
