NBA Ejections: David Jones (1) & TFFL Day 41

Referee (Crew Chief) David Jones ejected Toronto Raptors center Amir Johnson for physically contacting an official (Rule 12-A-V technical foul; conduct) during the third period of the Raptors-Trail Blazers game. With 5:02 remaining in the third quarter, official Jones had retrieved the game ball after administering the first of two free throws to Trail Blazers forward J.J. Hickson. Replays indicate Johnson attempted to grab the basketball from Jones' hands, while Jones attempted to pull away from Johnson. When Johnson ultimately ripped the basketball from Jones' grasp, Jones immediately ejected Johnson for a conduct technical foul. At the time of the ejection, the Trail Blazers were leading, 59-48. The Trail Blazers ultimately won the contest, 92-74.

The ejection was certainly warranted, but why wouldn't David Jones let Amir Johnson touch the ball. You can read his lips and all Johnson is saying is "let me see the ball, let me see it" Many NBA players do this in between free throws where the want to touch the ball. I don't know why, but it is common. I think Jones could have handled that better. However, once Johnson tried to take the ball from Jones he was as good as gone and deservedly so.

Why was Jones the CC? He was official #2 in the assignments with Mott being CC

My case for being ONLY a baseball umpire just got stronger....lol.

The box score has him as cc with Mott as #2 for some reason. Mott usually would be CC I figure, but I've also seen Dick Bavetta listed as a #2, so who knows...

Dick Bavetta is not a full time Crew Chief, neither are Mott or Jones. All three of them are part time crew chiefs along with Michael Smith, Zach Zarba and Leon Wood. It is possible Jones was the crew chief since they both are part time. However, I would guess it was Mott since he is a crew chief more often and has a little bit of a better playoff record, although both are consistently in the playoffs.
