MLB Ejection 055: Joe West (2; Dale Sveum)

HP Umpire Joe West ejected Chicago Cubs Manager Dale Sveum for arguing a safe call by 1B Umpire Toby Basner in the top of the 2nd inning of the Diamondbacks-Cubs game. With one out and none on,
West ushers a defiant Sveum to the dugout.
Diamondbacks batter AJ Pollock hit a 2-2 fastball from Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija on the ground to second baseman Darwin Barney, who threw to first baseman Anthony Rizzo as Pollock arrived at first base, resulting in Basner's call of "safe." Replays indicate Barney appeared to catch the ball with his foot on the base prior to Pollock's contact of first base, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Cubs were leading, 3-1. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 12-4.

This is Joe West (22)'s second ejection of 2013.
Joe West now has 4 points in the UEFL (4 Previous + 2 MLB + -2 Incorrect Call [Crewmate] = 4).
Crew Chief Joe West now has 1 point in the UEFL's Crew Division (1 Previous + 0 Incorrect = 1).

This is the 55th ejection of 2013.
This is the 27th Manager ejection of 2013.
This is the Cubs' 2nd ejection of 2013, T-2nd in the NL Central (PIT 4; CHC, MIL 2; CIN, STL 0).
This is Dale Sveum's first ejection since April 19 (Chris Guccione; QOC = Y).
This is Joe West's first ejection since May 25 (Ron Gardenhire; QOC = Y).

You can hear the glove whack before he comes close to the base in real time. OUCH. Rough night for Basner, but well done by West to get in there and take care of business. He's a real leader.

Perhaps some other crew chiefs could take notice! This is how it's done!

Two bad calls by the first base ump but a nice job by Joe West to step in for his guy. Regardless of how bad the call is, you have to stick up for your crew members.

Joe West typically annoys me as he reminds me of the, "Get off my lawn!" type. That said, he did what he was supposed to do. He stuck up for a young umpire and gave him a bit of a lesson along the way.

Now if only he could find a shirt to cover up his "West Vest" advertisement...

Good for Joe, but I mean come on. Those are two awful calls by Basner.

Outstanding job by Joe. He wasn't going to let his crew mate sink with the ship.

Since when is a shirt worn over the protector when wearing a plate coat?

Wow, Joe has sped up his ejection mechanic. He used to have a very light toss, but he has gotten much more enthusiastic this year.

Joe west may be controversial, but make no mistake that he is the best crew chief in baseball. As far as I'm concerned, we are looking at the next hall of fame umpire in joe west. Maybe Jerry layne and some of the other self centered crew chiefs can take notice of how they actually should do their job.

Since when did I say put a shirt over the protector *when wearing a plate coat*?

Didn't know I had to spell it out that I prefer a shirt to the plate coat.

The respect I already had for Joe has just increased ten-fold. If I'm a rookie out there, he is the crew chief I would want to have my back.

Well, as soon as June rolls around, we have our fifth ejection of the first day of the month. Old school - 5 ejections, one day. As for the sequence itself, that's the cowboy taking care of business. Great crew chief.

This is by far the best ejection of the year so far in my opinion. I just wish we could of seen the beginning of West taking over the conversation instead 20 replays. Yes he blew the call but still an awesome job by Joe West. Why cant all the crew chiefs be like this?

I have, yes. Do I actively? No. Do I still appreciate the rules of the game, case plays, bang-bang calls, and have a general appreciation for how tough it can be? Absolutely.

That's besides the point, though. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Nothing implied by my question, really. I remember having a conversation with the guy that runs the UniWatch blog (and writes for ESPN) when he spent a lot of time bemoaning the death of the white knickers in football for officials.

He simply didn't care how uncomfortable or impractical those stupid white pants were -- he just liked the look and hated the change purely from an aesthetic standpoint.

Which is why I asked the question. Some of my umpire friends think the plate coat is ridiculous -- the same way I feel when I watch them pull on a jacket on the plate over their chest protector. Others (like me) swear by them. I like them so much I bought a second one to have the proper color coat to work high school baseball.

Different strokes, indeed.

All good. Cheers.

Coaches should be allowed one or two challenges like in football. This sort of incorrect call becomes (or at least CAN become) more crucial in September and October....And it is hard to blame the umpire when it is that close.

this pretty much ends basner's status as a prospect
