With one out and three on, Mariners batter Jabari Blash hit a 2-2 pitch from Angels pitcher Nick Maronde to shortstop Tommy Field who threw to second baseman Andrew Romine who bobbled the baseball in an attempt to turn a double play. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Mariners Manager Lloyd McClendon, Whitson's ruling that Romine possessed the ball and tagged second base to retire Mariners baserunner R1 Tyler Smith was overturned, the call was incorrect. At the time of the instant replay review, the Angels were leading, 5-4. The Mariners ultimately won the contest, 10-6.
