Ejections 017 & 018: Angel Campos (2, 3)

HP Umpire Angel Campos ejected Pirates catcher Rod Barajas and Manager Clint Hurdle for arguing a ball one call in the bottom of the 2nd inning of the Pirates-Cardinals game. With none out and two on, Cardinals batter Carlos Beltran took a 0-2 sinker from Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett for a called first ball. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of the plate and below the hollow of the knee (pz value of 1.574; sz_bot of 1.650), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Cardinals were leading, 5-1. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 12-3.

These are Angel Campos (84)'s second and third ejections of 2012.
Angel Campos now has 8 points in the UEFL (-2 Previous + 2*[3 AAA + 2 Correct Call] = 8).
Crew Chief Dale Scott now has 2 points in the Crew Division (0 Previous + 2*[1 Correct Call] = 2).
*The call is correct pursuant to UEFL Rule 6-2-b, also known as the Miller Rule.

These are the 17th and 18th ejections of 2012.
This is the 6th player ejection of 2012.
This is the 11th Manager ejection of 2012.
Prior to his ejection, Barajas was 0-1 in the contest.

This site needs to post plays like this!

If we're talking about questionable calls, not ten minutes ago Campos let Molina call a Pirates batter out on a foul tip.

I'm getting sick and tired of the way these so called "writers" are constantly bashing away at the umpires. Yes, it was a bad call, we get it. Do we have to make an international emergency out of it? When an umpire makes an excellent ruling on a close play, where's the media coverage then? Oh but wait, that wouldn't fit in with the agenda to someday make umps obsolete.

They have to bash the umpires. It helps ratings. The only people that are umpire fans are also umpires them selves. A lot of people that dont like baseball that much think ejections are the best part of baseball. Kind of like how I think the only thing cool about hockey is the fights. I my self get mad at how bad the comintators are also, but I do think it helps the ratings of baseball.

@ kickersrule

You make a very valid point, although not every ump fan is also an ump. For instance, I have no umpiring experience, and I can quite riled up when the umps are mistreated.

@umpsrule, I respect how you support umpires. I'm betting you know or have a few friends that are umpires. If not its pretty cool that you are an umpire fan.

Anyone know what happened to CB Bucknor yesterday? I was watching the Pirates/Cardinals highlights from yesterday, and I noticed he started the game behind the plate, but then Dan Iassogna finished. I assume he must've gotten hurt, just curious if anyone knew what occured.

Bucknor left the game yesterday for an undisclosed reason. It looked like he might have not been feeling well. He looked pretty sick by the time he came out. Bucknor was also missing today with DJ Reyburn taking his spot. There are two triple A guys in this crew right now with Bill Miller on vacation.

I noticed that wasn't the only crew with two AAA umps working last night. The crew in Boston had Vic Carapazza working 1st, and Manny Gonzalez working HP, with Phil Cuzzi and Greg Gibson filling out the other two spots.

UmpsRule said...

@ kickersrule: Nope, no friends that are umps.

As for Bucknor, here's the video: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=21078787&c_id=mlb

This situation is reminiscent of the one last year when Campos chucked Matt Treanor and Ned Yost. In this case, it was a little more noticeable that something was going on as Barajas was standing up instead of crouching down. Most managers would probably get thrown out here, and Campos did a good job walking away and letting Dale Scott take over.

The problem here is the managers and players just don't believe Angel Campos. This happens more than you can believe with this guy. Once they stop believing you it's all down hill....including his career. Time to give some younger umpires their opportunity. Step aside......

Nobody believes a triple A fill in guy. Heard this from the mouth of Greg Gibson after he had 6 years in.

Mike said...

They don't believe him because he's not very good! And he shows often that he believes he owns the place. He lets everybody know that he is THE MAN in the ballpark. Go back to AAA!

Angel Compost is an affirmative action experiment gone horribly wrong. MLB is stuck with him because if they send him down after all this time, they look like fools.

"Mike" - one of my close friends knows Angel well and you could not be more WRONG about him. He is a very reserved, humble, quiet guy and is NOTHING like you described. Personally, I think he's the farthest thing from a "look at me" type umpire. Becareful what you write because what you "think" you see of him on TV, may not be true in reality

Well said. People are way too quick to judge the skills and abilities of umpires via this website. There's a reason why the MLB supervisors are all retired umpires and the ones deciding who fills in rather than the decision being made by people who have never been on the field in a professional game

Angel COMPOST? Obvious troll is obvious.

To be fair, I've called him that before myself.
