MLB Instant Replay Review S-20: Chad Whitson (S-1)

Instant replay reversed 2B Umpire Chad Whitson's out call in the top of the 8th inning of the Mariners-Angels game. With one out and three on, Mariners batter Jabari Blash hit a 2-2 pitch from Angels pitcher Nick Maronde to shortstop Tommy Field who threw to second baseman Andrew Romine who bobbled the baseball in an attempt to turn a double play. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Mariners Manager Lloyd McClendon, Whitson's ruling that Romine possessed the ball and tagged second base to retire Mariners baserunner R1 Tyler Smith was overturned, the call was incorrect. At the time of the instant replay review, the Angels were leading, 5-4. The Mariners ultimately won the contest, 10-6.

Damnit Whitson! This is why we can't have nice things.

Am I losing my mind? Isn't this on the transfer? I think Spring Training is like a bizzaro world!

I'm with you tmac. There should have been at least 3 or 4 plays overturned this spring but this was not one of them. To me it looked like the 2B had the ball in his possesion with his foot on the base and lost in the transfer after having already touched the base. This was a confusing overturn for sure.

It didn't look to me like he was trying to transfer, but to secure. That would mean that the overturn was correct, as the release wasn't voluntary. But I agree that it's strange that this subjective play is overturned when others that were less so were upheld. I would guess it depends on who's in the truck and who the crew chief is on the field.

For the record, Kerwin Danley was the Replay Official who overturned this call.

How does Soscia get to come out of the dugout here after the call is reversed? Will that be an auto ejection in the regular season?
